I just saw that episode on USA network this afternoon. Pretty fancy flying!
It's in the first 5 minutes of the episode called "Swan Song."

The Sportsman kit is $1200 and they estimate 40 hours at whatever your mech charges to install.

These engines vent so much oil through the crankcase breather that it's hard to say how much it actually "burns". If I fill mine up to the top mark on the dipstick, it will use a quart an hour, if I let it get down to 7 quarts, it hardly uses any at all.

My manual says 37 gallons useable, that would be 18.5 gals per side. I assume that the "unuseable" fuel in the tank can't be drained by normal means.
(this is a 170A with 20 gallon tanks)

Most adult air rifles will shoot right through the starling and punch a neat little hole in the hangar too. There are several effective designs of starling/sparrow traps around. A search on the 'net will turn up several. The "V trap" is very effective for starlings but is kind of big and i...

Hey John, when were you with CAM? I was one of those military guys who went direct from my last AV-8B sortie on a Friday afternoon to Cessna 421 ground school on the following Monday a.m. I was in Eagle Pass from Sep '96 to Feb '98. I realized how great that trailing link gear on the 421's was when ...

Maybe you can get one of those cool new aeronautical diesel engines that run on JetA. You just have to convince one of the manufacturers that there is enough demand among 170 owners to justify the cost of getting the STC. ;) http://www.centurion-engines.com/c17/c17_perform.htm http://www.smaengines....

I wonder how you factor in differential braking. I was taught that being able to use your brakes for directional control after you run out of rudder was the main reason for doing wheel landings. Of course I'm pretty new to tailwheel flying so please advise me if this is way off base.

"Wings at War"

Saw a really interesting episode of "Wings at War" on the Discovery Wings channel about Forward Air Controllers in Viet Nam. It had lots of really neat footage of Bird Dogs flying and landing in the jungle plus a lot of crashed Bird Dogs and some that made it back with battle damage. Also ...

Have you checked your RPM with an optical tach to make sure your panel tach is accurate? I had the same problem with the prop not making min RPM and it turned out to be just the tach was off at that RPM.

My 170A manual calls for 2230-2330 static RPM

One of my buds is an FO on the 300, I'm FO on the 320 for the red tails. I know of a couple of 170's at Charles Baker airport and there's one 170B at West Memphis tied down outside 8O Mine is the only one I know of at Dewitt Spain.

Hmm...I hadn't noticed that. Usually prices tend to drop a little this time of year and go up again just before spring. If you're still looking for a plane, I guess my 170A is for sale, though I haven't listed it yet. The wife just isn't comfortable in small planes. Let me know if you're interested....
