Hi Gang, The L-19 Vet that gave me my initial tailwheel checkout in my 170 in June always instructed me to carry power to the runway. I never asked him his logic behind the power issue, as it did produce a nice stable final and if I came off the power smoothly during the flare, a nice landing would ...

All great points being made here :!: Once I revalidate my CFI and start teaching my wife in our 170, we will indeed be taking the time to taxi back to the departure end of the runway. George is quite correct that this taxi back phase is an ideal low-workload time in which to reflect upon the landing...

Hi Rudy, Seems to me that during the taxi back to the departure end of the runway after a full stop landing lets the engine cool as much if not more than at the later stages of rollout. I think the key here is the smooth gradual application of power. I started with full stop landings, but now prefer...

My O-300 seems to be leaking from the rubber joint on both pushrod tubes on the middle cylinder of each bank. Fore and aft tubes each side look OK. I would be interested to know more detail on both the pushrod conversion kit and the company that makes/sells the kit. Does anyone have a phone number f...

Manifold Pressure Gauge
In the quest for more panel space in my '54 170, I wonder if the manifold pressure gauge can be taken out :?: I find it strange that an aircraft with a fixed-pitch prop has a MP gauge, and since I have no plans for a constant speed conversion, and do not use the MP gauge for any reference, I would l...

Combined Engine Instruments
My '54 currently has separate instruments for engine oil pressure, temperature, and carburetor air temp. This is taking up a lot of space. I would like to hear from owners who have used a combined instrument for oil pressure and temperature. Any recommendations as to model numbers and manufacturer? ...

Hi Valt, System dumped my previous post, so here we go again :!: I just bought my first 170 last month, a '54. I paid $33.5K for it. It has 4500 TTAF, 850 SMOH in '74, and about 400 STOH. Damage history in '62 from a storm flipover. Decent paint in 1998, although a few runs/sags in the paint suggest...

Night Panel Illumination
Flying at night for the first time a couple of days ago uncovered a problem with the panel illumination...or I should say lack of illumination :( Both of the overhead lights are working when I look up at them, but there is no light projected onto the panel, with the exception semi-round "sliver...

Window Hardware
Just thought I would pass on a neat trick I found for replacing a worn hinge pin in the window opening hardware on my new '54. The old pin, with "expanded" low profile terminations had worn out and was flopping around in the yoke bracket that is attached to the door. A machine screw would ...

I might be opening a can of worms  but my '54 has bolts securing the control yoke (wheel) to the tubes. Two bolts per wheel. Actually they are round head machine screws. I think they may be #12-24 or 1/4-20. The airplane came to me this way, and the wheels seem to stay on real nice...even with...

Hi Valt, I think I would vote for the '56 model. I just bought a '54 last month and am having a ball with it. My first taildragger. I would agree with George on the panel switch issue. Nice to be able to walk in to NAPA and get what you need. Can't agree with JDH on the Madras tips, though. My '54 h...

Hey George, The KLN-88 is a loran unit? I may scan TAP for one. I see Flybuddy loran units that are advertized to slide in and replace the Apollo 604. Are these any good :?: Flybuddy also has a GPS unit that uses the 604 tray, as long as the antenna is changed, but it is in the $700 price class. If ...

Thanks for the information. I can't find anything in the STC paperwork for the Madras wingtips that tells me what they are supposed to do for me. All I see are reduced maneuvering and Vne speeds. You are right on the limited horizontal visibility. Looking out the side window I always see the big dro...
