Re: Call for Tailwheel spring thickness data
IMG_0545.jpeg This page was found in the Structural Repair Instructions TM 1-1L-19A-3. Note that the bottom leaf on the L-19 is thicker than that on the C-170. My surplus L-19 main leaf is 0.347” thick in comparison to the published 0.344” thickness. Does anyone have a copy of this L-19 manual that...

Re: Main Tailwheel Leaf Spring Comparison
Bill, The U3241A-002 bushing is Univair's p/n for Scott p/n 3241-2 or Cessna p/n 0442011-2 as seen in fig. 94-3. This is the bushing that fits at the back end of the spring as shown here . I believe your photo is showing the forward end of the spring pack. There the bushing (p/n 0510000-36 in fig. 2...

Re: Landing Light Surprise
2. The landing/taxi light lens has no gasket (nor is one shown in the IPC) and a gap exists on both sides. Looks like someone duct taped it from the inside years ago. Bob, I’m not clear whether the gap is a span-wise gap or if the gap is between the leading edge of the frame and the lens. If the is...

CC Pocock at Bush-Air could probably answer your question.

Re: Horizontal stabilizer
Does anyone know if there is an stc or mod to add weights to the elevator of a 170A like the 170B? I've run across a 337 form for a 1948 C-170 where they added 6 pounds to each elevator "according to manufacturer's instructions". This form, because it predates Oct. 1, 1955, is considered ...

A bad day at Cessna
I ran across this while delving into FAA registration data. A very bad day at Cessna.
Wish they would have added serial numbers to the corresponding N numbers. My guess is these planes — three C-170s, the rest C-140s — were destroyed on July 14, 1948.- Wed Oct 18, 2023 2:39 pm

Re: IFR Capable 170's
Bob, In the pile of junk I got with my project was an Airborne check valve manifold, p/n 1H5-4. IMG_0509.jpeg According to Parker these are to be inspected annually on units over five years old and replaced after 10 years. I wouldn’t be surprised if you find one of these tucked away behind your pane...

Re: Vibration problem
Gareth,
It’s been a year since you wrote about the issue you were having with vibration. Any luck (of the Irish) finding the source? I’ve filed Cessna’s Service Letter SE 76-24 here. Item #2 there is a “Vibration Checklist”.

Re: float performance
There have been at least three 1948 C-170's on Edo 89-2000 floats, N2554V, N4138V and N3991V. The latter was owned by Turner Aviation Company who apparently got, or tried to get, an STC for the alteration. (The one STC held by Turner Aviation Co Inc. is SA1-245 which is described as, "Lycoming ...

Re: Adding a 4th Fuel Tank to Ragwing
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS get approval BEFORE you start ANY modifications!!!! Or spend ANY money!!! The FAA or DER will be looking to see if there is sufficient reason to approve or deny the modifications. If approved, it’s up to the installer to have an approved mod installed correctly. If installed be...

Re: '48 C170 Fuel Pump
I found a 337 form dated Dec. 14, 1949 which shows that a 1948 C-170 received approval to replace the original fuel lines and pump with a gravity feed system as on the later models. I've posted it here. This is considered approved data.

… my C-172 was using a -3 fitting and hose that went through the firewall. …-Marc Marc, Not sure if I’m interpreting what you wrote correctly, but the oil pressure hose should have an AN 832 bulkhead union fitting at the firewall. Re: FAA CARES - Online Registration Services
Doug, Thanks for posting this! It needs to placed as a “sticky note” in the Mx Library. It answers my question to Harlow in the recent discussion regarding removing fuel pumps on 1948 C-170s. STCs prior to October 1, 1955 are considered approved data rather than just acceptable data. So, if one can ...

Re: '48 C170 Fuel Pump
… Remember, an FAA approved 337 is not approved data. Hopefully it contains references to, or approved data, but the document itself is just another government form. Unless that 337 was written prior to October 1, 1955 according to page 14 of FAA Order 8100.16 . Harlow, what would it take to get co...

Re: Mixture cable part number
Avcon drawing 17034 and the Avcon parts list in our Mx Library doesn’t list a mixture cable. Drawing 17034, “INSTL: POWER PLANT CONTROLS” shows two possible installations. The standard option for a mixture control is a bowden wire cable using bracket p/n 17020-2 and an optional heavier cable which u...
