Richard please remember that for the most part I'd guess the collective wisdom here at the forum including me has not pushed the envelope of the 170 in Alaska. I'm sure there are exceptions and I've done some really cool stuff in my dreams. 8) So before you make a final decision on anything, whethe...

Aftermarket combustion heater possibly available

In another thread we were discussing (well, I was whining and others were trying to help  ) cabin heating in various models. I don't think it makes a tinkers dam which C-170 you are flying. In the Alaska interior winter the heater is not going to be enough.---- with the possible exception of t...

I saw that thread too. The A model I'm looking at has the stock winterization kit so if I buy it I would be making that mod first thing next October! Well, the A is looking too good to pass up based on something as minor as potential frostbite! Perhaps an aftermarket heater will help do the trick. I...

I wouldn't pass up a good A for a lessor B model because of the flaps unless you are going to REALLY REALLY push the envelope. Make sure the B model your looking at has 3" scat coming of the back of the right muffler into a manifold that travels the width of the inside fire wall. That is the i...

circling for purchase landing - A or B arrg!

So, I am negotiating both a 1950 A model and a 53 B model for purchase... I live in central Alaska where it is cold (well, not as cold as you Fairbanks folks but close) and am wondering if the difference between the cabin heat in the 50 and 53 is really that significant. Also I've only flown in a B ...

good info

Really good info, I was curious how it seemed to be working differently up here than other places I've been. Is this how most "non-standard" propellers are approved in Alaska? For instance, a 170B (which will remain nameless ) with an 80 inch McCauley on the stock engine and 8.50 tir...

prop

Yeah, that is what I have been thinking of late, that I was basing my power setting on what that RPM would have been outputting at warmer temps, we might have been actually cruising at more like 85% or even 90%. I'm out of whack anyway on the RPM operating range with the cruise pitch on the prop. Oh...

prop pitch

Checked over the phone, the prop is a Sensenich 74" diameter with a 58 inch pitch. Curious what other flyers out there with that prop are getting as far as performance numbers, since the ones I experienced seem to be generally unbelievable  My brain could have been frozen along with the r...

Re: fastest 170

Wow! What kind of prop was it using? Those numbers sound like the numbers you get with an engine upgrade as well. If the numbers are correct, I'm sure several members would be interested in the information on that prop. One of the only hits on these great airplanes is the speed. How about some info...

fast plane

Flew in a 53 B model the other day with a prop mod, cruised just under 140MPH indicated at 70% power close to sea level ...GPS showed a ground speed closer to 135 MPH with no wind reported. No wheel pants, 6.50s, lots of antennas, dual venturis. And a C-145 of course. It seemed to climb off the grou...

carb ice

Remember when you suspect carb ice you are never supposed to push the carb heat back in...leave the knob out until problem is resolved! Then leave it out after that! Ride it into the ground with carb heat out! Too many accidents in the database where the pilots stated "pulled carb hea...
