Re: Rudder Hinge Delema

I do just about anything old. Last projects were a Stearman, Luscombe and 3 Clippers. Got two Super Cubs in the shop along with a J3 and a Stinson 108-3 on the way to get a 220 hp Franklin installed. They are all fun.

Re: Looking for help with my tailwheel bracket Mine is cracked

The springs I have had re-arched were done at a spring shop. They use two large radius-ed plates. The radius on the hydraulic press gently pushes the spring down between the plates and then back up. They then move the spring a little and repeat going back and forth until the desired arch is achieved...

Re: Looking for help with my tailwheel bracket Mine is cracked

If you can buy one with the right arch I would but for the Clipper and Pacer Univair has yet to see the light on the problem. We got lucky on this 170 and were able to use the fairly new spring that had been on it. The Cessna springs are harder to rearch also because Piper has an arch where Cessna h...

Re: Tail Wheel Shimmy

Go to a spring shop and watch them arch springs. They do it a little at a time moving back and forth with a large press and a good radius. We have had them rearched with excellent results on Pipers.

Re: Looking for help with my tailwheel bracket Mine is cracked

George, That is from my website. My Dad wrote the article. The angle on this 170 after replacing the bracket was so far forward using the spring that came with the kit that the tail would not try a track straight but would try and rotate to the side. Put the original spring on and all is well.

Re: Rudder Hinge Delema

I looked at the rudder and fuselage and am not sure what you are seeing. There is paint rubbed off the rudder bellcrank where it contacts the stop bolts. Is that what you are looking at?

What part needs to be replaced and what is wrong with the rudder deflection stops?

Re: Looking for help with my tailwheel bracket Mine is cracked

Got the parts and installed. The tailwheel is canted way too far forward now. Gonna try the old spring to get the pivot bolt more perpendicular to the ground. I am afraid it is going to try and dart for the weeds the way it is now.

Re: Rudder Hinge Delema

Thanks John. I just ordered the parts from Cessna. A-325-1 Bearing-Oilite $10.28 and a 0431119 Bushing-Rudder hinge $94.30. I have a feeling one of these is missing. Still don't understand the 3/16" hole on the bottom of the rudder. I posted some pictures here. http://picasaweb.google.com...

Rudder Hinge Delema

I have 170A in my shop that I am changing out the tailwheel attach bracket IAW Cessna Service Instruction 70A52-4. When I removed the rudder the top to hinges were held on with 1/4" bolts but the bottom was held on with a 3/16" bolt. The hole in the bottom of the rudder hinge is 3/16"...

Re: Looking for help with my tailwheel bracket Mine is cracked

George, Could I get this information from you? I have a 170A in my shop with the old steel fitting that has been welded and is cracked again. Between this and the rotted out pancake muffler I am at my Witt's end. 8O

Re: Pancake Mufflers

Gotta love the search feature. I mostly deal with rag wing Pipers and am doing an annual on a 170A for an older gentleman who frequents my airport from time to time. Got some serious problems with the pancake mufflers and thought I would research my options. Thanks for all the information. He doesn'...
