Well, the new magic (and expensive) bolts didn't help at all. After partial disassembly of the panel looking for the culprit, we determined that the problem the WELDING between the two members of the seaplane brace and the large sleeve in the middle. A pencil-tip magnet sticks to the weld line and n...

I've held the compass next to the V-brace along the entire length of each leg and there is no effect on the compass. The problem seems to be the bolts. We'll see for sure when the special ones arrive next week. From other dialog on this site, it seems that what Atley Dodge sells is stainless braces,...

That's interesting.

I just got a callback from the fastener guru at Aerocenter/Spencer Aircraft near Seattle, which claims to have found special non-magnetic bolts on the East Coast. I should receive them here in AK next Tuesday.

Compass interference from windshield V-brace attach bolts

Two years after installing my Atlee-Dodge windshield V-brace, I suddenly have a problem whereby the compass always indicates North or pretty close to that. The compass is on an aluminum bracket just a few inches above the center of the windshield V-brace, which of course is attached there with 3 AN4...

Tach colored arc positions

I dug out the PROP (Hartzell HC-C2YK1BF) TCDS, and it hows "Avoid continuous operation between 2000 and 2250 RPM." So it must be the the RPM restriction comes from the PROP, not the ENGINE. That's a new one on me. I always thought it was something to do with counterweights (or lack thereof...

Tach colored range markings for Doyn O-360A1D 170B

I started this thread over a year ago. I still have been unable to obtain any data regarding the Doyn conversion on my 170B. FAA has tried to contact the STC holder on my behalf without success, even telling me that they cancelled some of the party's PMAs years ago for failure to respond to FAA's ow...

Upper case

The workhorse printing device of the 1960s/early 70s, the 10 character-per-second Model 33 Teletype (trademark of the Teletype Corporation of Skokie, IL), printed only uppercase. If you sent it an ASCII character code for a lowercase letter, it simply printed the corresponding uppercase character. I...

Engine mount-to-firewall bushing removal for seaplanes

In the course of the first real annual of my 170B floatplane (the one at the time of purchase turned out to be a joke), the following strange subject has come up. It is being suggested that there is some requirement or recommendation to replace all the rubber bushings (Items 4, 6, and 11, total of 8...

There are two 5/16" ID by about .024" thick external "C" clips inside the elevator trim jackscrew mechanism, one up against each end bushing. If one of those were to have broken, that might produce the slop you're describing. The Cessna pins that hold the end bushing in are a pai...

paint shops

Don't use the guys in Yelm, WA. I had them paint a Widgeon in 2000. Within a year, the paint was literally falling off the airplane in large sheets.

rudder hinge

That would be great! I need to replace this (cracked) part before I can start reassembly, starting with a horizontal stabilizer that's arriving tomorrow. I'll email your hotmail account.

Looking for a source for rudder (horn) hinge p/n 0510109

I need a "rudder hinge" p/n 0510109. Cessna's response is its all-too-frequent "no longer available." This is the part that rivets to the fuselage, just above where the tailwheel attaches, and on which the rudder control horn attaches and pivots. It is item 25 on page 48-49 of th...

Doyn

I've contacted the FAA Wichita ACO about this. The receptionist indicated that I'm not the first person seeking into about this STC b/c of the STC holder being unresponsive. I was directed to leave voicemail for the FAAer who is directly looking into this matter and did so. Hopefully I'll hear back ...

seaplane AFM

I ordered one from the Cessna dealer here at AIA (Anchorage Int'l Airport). He said that Cessna told him they'd have to go to their archives to retrieve it, and the price is now $63, not $53. Why do I think all Cessna has to do is go to the file, hit the "Print" key, and make a tidy $62.99...
