Re: So Cal Flabob (KRIR) Low and Slow Fly-In May 10-12

If you haven't been to RIR, you definitely want to go. I based an ol D35 Bonanza out of there while in the Air Force during the 1986 to 1989 time frame. Names like Ed Marquart, Bill Turner, Lou Stolp and Ray Stits were all there, along with all kinds of historic aircraft from the golden age of air r...

Re: TX Solar Eclipse Fly-in Apr. 6-8

Last weekend, we had our Texas April C170 fly-in hosted by George and Jamie Horn, at their beautiful airstrip near Spicewood, Texas, just west of Austin. This event was even more special as it was planned to expand into an extended weekend getaway culminating in a solar eclipse party. As it turned o...

Re: Changes for TX & OK Feb. Fly-in

While only two of our number had not been to Smokin' Joe's before, we all agreed afterward that it was definitely worth the effort to attend. We all want to thank Ken and Jim for their role in organizing this event. I especially want to thank Ken, Naomi, and my wife Nancy for stopping by Ardmore (AD...

Re: Changes for TX & OK Feb. Fly-in

Weather and runway condition is looking good for Saturday, 10 Feb. We're looking forward to seeing our Oklahoma and Texas friends (and any others who can make it) at Smokin' Joe's. Please check the page at: https://app.box.com/s/pbhv7ewkla43nnzv583fd75rj490snxg for important information. Also, this ...

TX & OK DATE CHANGE TO Saturday, Feb 10. 2024

I started a new topic on this fly-in to bring it back near the top and because this is at an un-charted airport with unique features. This will be a joint Texas/Oklahoma fly-in to a new and special destination. Smokin' Joe's Rib Ranch, 3165 Jollyville Rd, Davis, OK 73030, (580) 369-2818, is just a s...

Re: 2 1/4" instruments on the stationary sub panel

I will point out that this great idea has limitations. It only works if the ID of the hole saw is VERY close to the size of the original hole. If you were to want to turn a 2-1/4" hole into a 3-1/8" hole for instance, You'll need to fabricate some 2-1/4" wood disks. How about if you w...

Re: Craftsman hand-tool warranty

I worked for Sears in the auto shop while in college. Back then, mechanics showed up with, and used their own tools. It was really handy when I broke a tool in the shop, I could stroll a couple dozen paces inside the store, exchange it, then walk back out with a new replacement and keep on working. ...

I might mention Aerospace Logic. They have a really nice combination Oil Pressure & Oil Temperature, both digital and analog readouts, all in the same 2-1/4" gauge. http://www.aerospacelogic.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=130 You'll finally know what your oil temperatur...

Re: C-170A Airforms Baffle kit on a C145-2H?

I find these comments about AirForms interesting. They made, and shipped to me, a custom rear bulkhead omitting multiple holes that would normally have been drilled through it. I had changed to Slick mags, and decided to go with their bulkhead fittings for the wires to the top plugs. Really cleaned ...

Re: TX C170 Fly-in Schedule for last quarter of 2023

Four of us met at the Texas Antique Aircraft Assoc. fly-in at Gainesville, Texas (KGLE) for lunch at the Smokehouse Barbecue restaurant just down the road. This date, exactly at lunch time, just happened to coincide with an annular solar eclipse, and we were very close to the optimum path for viewin...

Re: According to some “Taildraggers Suck”.

Miles your story is tragic, and frighteningly too common. I find myself wondering how any instructor could sign a tailwheel endorsement without finding some significant crosswind in which to give the endorsee some practice, and on paved runways. I know it's often troublesome to find the right condit...

Re: According to some “Taildraggers Suck”.

George captured this in his quote above, but I especially chuckled over this: Tailwheel pilots are essentially members of a self-selecting masochists’ club and take a certain sort of pride in their machines’ anachronistic faults. Seriously though, the entire reason I currently own a C170B, is becaus...
