More Travels

Another trip to Alaska. After all my years in Alaska (22) I got tired of not having been to Sitka or Nome. Got only as far as McGrath so still haven't made it to Nome, but found Sitka to be even better than I'd been told ! The only good weather leg we had on the whole trip from St. Maries, Id. to Po...

Travels

I've just returned from 4 months in S. E. Arizona (Safford) and have a few comments about that area. First, and I REALLY hate to say this, that area is better seen from the ground. They have had some rain for a change this year, and those canyon areas are truly spectacular !!! The desert is just on ...

Elimuinate the 337?

I just read the latest edition of the Idaho Aviation Assoc. "Fly Line". Pages 10 and 11 have an article that scares the willies out of me. Seems that in Alaska the FAA has decided to ELIMINATE the 337 field apporval process. Any modifications would have to go through the STC route. Now thi...

Think I kind of like a combination here....A stall horn that only honks when the plane is stopped, on the ground, with the engine shut down, but that works great then!

After 2400+ hrs without a stall horn of any sort, if one ever went off while I was flying, It would probably startle me right into the ground. I'd rather keep my feel as to how the bird is flying and therefor know when I'm close to a stall. Pete

Most any auto parts store.... The GM door handles work fine. They work even better if you drill and tap the shaft, drill through the center of the handle and screw the handle to the shaft.

No numbers or hype, I'll just offer a ride to any doubters. The 0-360 is wonderful!

Tailwind landings

This is just about one particular strip. Those of you who might be interested in going into Shearer (2U5, 10 miles up the Selway River from Moose Ck, in Idaho), Do NOT try landing with a tail wind!! If you have the proper altitude on approach a go around is not possible. I don't know how I did it; G...

Eric, I'm with you. I like to fly the back country and many of our Idaho back country strips are rough and short. Therefor I do my best to make ALL my landings close in and short field. This means that seldom is my speed more than 1.2 to 1.4 VSO from downwind to touchdown. (I'm usually too close to ...

Sorry, but I have to say that your 2 cents worth is worth just about that in this case. My actual experience (and one other to my first hand knowledge) is at odds with your statements. Any time you can make an engine breathe better you WILL get better fuel economy and more power. Again, if your engi...

Tom, Yes, I did go the 337 route. The FAA here in Spokane (closest outlet, but operates under the Seattle office) wouldn't even consider the mod So I took it to Denver, had the work done and got it approved. It could also have been done in Alaska. However, Power Flow has (As I understand it) decided...

Rather than make claims myself about the tuned exhaust systems, I'd suggest you ask any competent race car mechanic, or just look yourself at any modern race car. You won't find one without a tuned exhaust. Same principles apply to ANY internal combustion engine. Pete

Eric, the Lazar ingition was installed at Lebanon, Oregon, but that FBO is no longer in business. It does have an STC and took about two hours to install and set up. I never checked the numbers all that close, but I did get significant savings in fuel consumption (about 2 gph as I recall) and enough...

My bird is a bit unusual in that I have not only the 0-360, but also a Lazar ignition and the Power Flow System tuned exhaust. I've found 2450 square gives about 140 mph (8:00 tires) and burns about 10.5 gph. However, for me, getting there is most of the fun. So, 2300 rpm and 18" mp ;gives 112-...

The Cleveland conversion is certainly common and easy to get approval for, but has anyone tried, lately, to get approval for the double puck Clevelands ? I've got 180 gear legs and 8:oo tires and have been told by the local FAA "people" to not even apply for a 337 for the conversion. Of co...
