Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
Gary, I believe the manufactured head style is irrelevant. I believe both ends of the rivet are by design intended to be formed shop heads, in part due to the length/depth of rivet/hole, to get adequate expansion throughout. With this mind, I don't understand the IPC call out for 426 rivets. They co...

Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
I appreciate the info shared in this post and it's a great reminder to myself of how little I know. :D . Thanks everyone ! Jim, I am curious how you would approach this. I respect your experience very much. I do not see that much has been learned here in this thread, yet. In your work, do you have ...

Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
No, I'm not making anything. I'm proving (or not) a process. If I'm satisfied with my process, then I'll be installing serviceable fittings into a serviceable lift strut tube. If I'm not satisfied, then I'll buy a serviceable assembly.johneeb wrote:Del,

Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
Yes, the manufactured 100 degree head is removed prior to insertion in the hole. It's length is cut to allow ample protrusion on both sides so that after the rivet is squeezed tight throughout the length of the hole and into the the countersinks on both sides. Then we use a rivet shaver to mill it ...

Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
Miles, we need something in that photo for scale reference! Those flush rivets in the strut are huge and I always wondered how they bucked them... They are 5/16" diameter and 2 inches long. It's been 27 years since I've worked with rivets this size. It was on a Twin Otter wing spar. They had c...

Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
Would (maybe obvious to some) you shave the two ends afterwards, for the finish? Jim, Yes, the manufactured 100 degree head is removed prior to insertion in the hole. Re: How to set a big-@$$ rivet
How would YOU set a rivet like this? On a part like a strut I'd be tempted to try a giant rivet squeezer -- a hydraulic press. They are a bit on the uncommon side in that they have an 82-degree head angle rather than 100. I've never heard of a 426 rivet being anything other than 100-degrees. Quite ...

Re: Heavy duty steering arm
The principal steering problem when taxiing the C-170 is the pressure result from the angle of dangle on the steering chains between the rudder horn and the tail wheel steering arm. It stinks. The last of the 1955 C-170s with the steering chains coming out of the lower rear part of the fuselage, as...

Re: Parts Officially Obsoleted ?
Would be nice if they's open source the drawings and specs so that other's could pick up support for the motor. This is often accomplished through a FOI request, assuming the part(s)/assembly were ever used by the government. Drawings data is simpler/cheaper than reverse engineering, but there are ...

Hey Miles, I think you know this about me already; my comment "it's just a machine" was/is sarcasm (I forget to use the emoticons sometimes, especially when posting from an iPhone) These "machines", whether it be an aircraft, truck, car, tractor, or even an old hand crank drill p...

Re: brake master cylinders
Bruce, I thank you kindly for the instruction. I did say that this is not bothersome at all, and I mean this. No worries, I was only curious why it happens. I still am unable to cabbage on to the transmission of how it all works. I don't care. I like reading old post. I know how to check the appropr...
