Re: Accident Report re: electronic gyro install error?

Most avionics techs that I've met are not mechanics and should <not> be removing systems without appropriate supervision. They may have an A&P cert, but most do not have the experience or aptitude, nor enough opportunity to stay actively engaged and current on mechanical systems. Sad deal. About...

Re: Steel axel bolts

Depending on the shim(s) thickness after adjusting camber and toe, you may find you need a longer bolt. With the NAS and MS series bolts being more expensive, I'd use AN bolts temporarily for the alignment, then grip the holes for proper length NAS or MS substitute.

Re: Solid Axle Questions

Several years ago, we began installing the maximum allowable amount of shims, before installing the P.Ponk block, whether needed or not. We place the shims between top of gear leg and the block. If you need to raise a wing later, just move shims from top to bottom as needed.

Re: Black stuff on inside walls of fuselage

It's faster and cheaper to replace the skin(s) than to remove the goo. I'm pretty sure MIL-H-5606 dissolves it, but makes a bigger mess and apparently takes a few decades.

Bruce,
You big spender

I try to at least order enough so that UPS doesn't make more $$ than Spruce. Share the rest.

Re: Windshield Replacement

I was told the other day [haven’t tried it yet] but pouring beer over the hard to remove paper protection helps to remove it. Sorry to inform you, you were told wrong. It's repurposed beer that removes the paper. Let me see if I can remember how this works. First, you drink the beer. Then you wizz ...

Re: Aircraft Spruces’ New Online Site

When they first changed it, I didn't like it. I thought it was clunky, and the search feature produced too many results even when using the exact part number. I figure that was just me being a curmudgeon. I'm very much a creature of habit and resistant to change. Now that I'm used to it, I like it b...

Looking for left lift strut 170A

I'm looking for a left wing strut for a 1950 Cessna 170A P/N 0523606. This one has the Hi-Shear fasteners in the fittings.

Re: F&M Oil filter adapter

Since we're talking about hardware stores, I can remember as kid going into the Western Auto at the corner of Hwy 71 and Main Street. They had the worn smooth wood floor George speaks of. They also had this impressive (to me, as a kid) ceiling fan arrangement. There must have been 6 or 8 big fans, a...

Re: Call for Tailwheel spring thickness data

One other interesting tidbit; all of these Cessna NOS leaf springs were already chamfered/beveled, so as not to wear into the springs below them. I've not seen this with any aftermarket springs. I'm guessing these are the only full set of OEM new springs in the wild. Maybe someone else has some, but...

Re: Call for Tailwheel spring thickness data

I have a complete new old stock tail cone assembly for a 170B. It still had the original Cessna pick tag wired to it when I bought it, and also included the leaf springs. I have reason to believe the springs have been with the tail cone assembly since it left Cessna. The springs measure as follows; ...

Earliest knock-kneed gear legs question

A customer just sent me a pair of reconditioned gear legs. They both have the hole that's drilled completely through. The gear we removed were also the knock-kneed type, but only have a dimple for the brake line retainer to clip into place. I can find or fab the brake line retainer straps, but the I...

Re: Stripped out rear seat anchor nuts

On the forward nutplate, the flush head rivets that attach the nutplate to the bulkhead flange are underneath the floorboards. You can use a nutplate drill jig to 'find' those 2 rivets. Drill through floorboards, removing old nutplate. Install new nutplate with button head rivets through floorboards...
