Pilots...jeesh, they're never happy! Although I'll be the first to admit that the 170 isn't exactly an overpowered speed demon, I knew that going in. For the money spent on a first class engine upgrade, I'd buy a 180 instead, but that's just my opinion. The bigger engines add to the empty weight, re...

LOW oil temperature!
With about 20 hours on my overhauled C-145, I have a problem getting the oil temp high enough to get the condensation out of the engine. First off, I have a new oil temp gauge. Before installing, I checked the accuracy by placing the probe in a pot of water on the stove, along with a candy thermomet...

Well, I have noticed exactly the same thing - by myself, or with two of us in front, the elevator is a few degrees down in cruise flight. This means that throughout the CG range, the elevator is always down in level flight. There is a certain amount of trim drag associated with this. My experience d...

Hi John, I did exactly that a couple of years ago. I drilled a 1/16 hole in the bottom, at the low spot just prior to the bend. It didn't work 8O Maybe the hole wasn't big enough, but I was reluctant to make it bigger because of the possible ram air loss to the airspeed indicator. Perhaps a little t...

Well, I've passed the 10 hour mark on my rebuild, and I'm very pleased. After three hours of low altitude, wide open throttle flying at full rich mixture, the oil temp has dropped from about 210 to 190. The engine seems to have limbered up nicely, and now turns up to 2,700 rpm in level flight. After...

The 170...a Bonanza and J-3, all in one trip!
Interesting trip today in ole' 43A. On my usual 200 nm trip to Greenville, NC at 7,500 feet I had at one point a 165 knot groundspeed! I made the trip in 1 + 20, a new FAI record :!: Of course, I had to come back to Rock Hill, SC. With winds like this, the turbulence down low was pretty intense, so ...

I'm curious about that too, Joe. I plan on removing my control wheel shafts for re-chroming soon. I did get the proper rivets a while back, much cheaper than the usual outrageous price from some outfit in Arizona, but I've forgotten who! I think they were in Tucson. I'll look around and try to find ...

Actually the reason for the change in 1961 to the 12 inch fuselage numbers was because the 20 inch wing numbers were difficult to read from the ground, believe it or not. The only time they are properly oriented for a quick identification is when the airplane is directly headed for the observer. At ...

Thanks John, yes it is the master (battery) relay/contactor/solenoid. I was being a little tongue in check about it being a Studebaker part... OK, this is what I have determined. The original, four post Cutler-Hammer relay is available and very, very expensive. I called several Cessna dealers, and t...
