Re: Trio Autopilot Update
I talked to Paul after 2021 AirVenture and he said that they dropped the project after Garmin put the C170B on their list of possible projects. I do not remember Trio or Jeff Odum taking deposits for the C170B certification program. Maybe I missed out on that. I am hoping someone, Garmin, Trio or Tr...

Re: Autopilot, Trio Pro Pilot or Century 1
Yesterday I received an email from Jeff Odum and he stated that they have received requests from 10 interested parties for a Cessna 170 autopilot. They will reach out to all interested parties when they are ready to start the project. Looks like there may be a modern digital autopilot in the 170’s f...

Re: franklin 220 hp engine conversions
Hi Roger, I have a 1952 C170B with the PZL Franklin 220 and Hartzell CS prop. I installed the engine using the Franklin Engines STC and have about 550 hours since install. Great performance on the C170B. The engine is very efficient. I usually cruise at 7K to 8 K feet and WOT. Fuel consumption is ab...

I have had my C170 flying with the stock engine since 1989 but with the Franklin only since 11/06. I have about 40 hours on a PZL engine. The performance is great! We fly out of an airport at 6600' MSL. It no longer struggles to get out of there. This summer should be the acid test. Last Nov I depar...

Another 172 Taildragger
Hi Mark, I think the heat treat was about $200. Maybe it is cheaper here in AZ. We used .080 2024T0 for both the main fitting and the doublers. We got all of the changes (ED and material thickness) preapproved on a 337 before making the parts. When the parts come back from heat treat you need to mas...

Hi Dick, Well the battery is a ways back but I lay down some 4 inch thick foam and shimmy down the starboard side of the empennage moving the battery one bay at a time. The higher empty weight and the battery install was enough incentive for me to lose 25lbs. Still trying to lose more! When I get ol...

Andrew, My Franklin (CS Hartzell) converted 1952 C170B weights in at 1533 Lbs with unusable fuel and full oil. The aircraft is modified with center stack panel, all new instruments and radios (2 ea Attitude gyros, DG, PS audio panel, UPS SL30, GX60, GTX327, JPI EDM700, FS450 FF) 172 articulating sea...

A friend of mine and I converted his 1956 C172 to a tail dragger using the Fravel conversion. We thought building the tail wheel fittings was the hardest part. That said we found the dimensions for the .080 tail wheel brackets and doublers did not have sufficient edge distance. We made them a little...

tail wheel retainer channel
Just another thought, If you cannot get the spring pack out with out removing the channel maybe you could just back the nuts off enough to loosen the channel and not take the nuts all the way off. Would save getting the nuts back on the bolts which was the most difficult.

tail wheel retainer channel
Hi Charlie, I just replaced my tail wheel leaf spring pack. In the process I found the channel had two small cracks located in the notches where the sides of the channel bend up. I was able to remove the channel/bulkhead attach nuts without removing the vertical/horizontal. I used a 1/4 drive wobbli...

172 tailwheel conversion
Hi Mark, Last year I worked with a friend and we converted a 1956 C172 to a TW using the Fravel STC. As you have found out the most difficult part was making the TW attach bracket/doublers. We pulled a fiberglass mold off of the tail cone and then made a cement buck. Hammer formed 2024-0 to shape an...

Matt, It is a small world! I too worked at Gordons Hobby Lobby. I think it was between about 1969 thru 1972 or so. A couple of years ago I was working a project with another aerospace company out of Tucson and worked with a guy who's place I took at GHL when he left GHL to join the Air Force. Gordon...

Hi Matthew, Sounds pretty familiar to me. I started working in a hobby shop at 15 and continued thru my first year of college. I started my R/C adventure flying single and two channel tube type equipment using escapement type servos. Finally moved up to Galloping Ghost equipment and then on to the f...

John, It appears that you have an autopilot in the aircraft. What model is it? Was it installed with an STC or just a 337?
Thanks, Larry
