Music wire usually, is easily found in the local hobby shop. K & S has displays of 18" and 36" lengths in various diameters.

If I were you, I'd want to beat up the nut that glued carpet down. MEK or some other solvent will remove the zinc chromate primer. Alcohol might work. Have a fire extinguisher handy.
