Re: xm weather on ipad
Are you talking about the Baron XM weather? I'd like to get it for mine but I can't see spending $1100 for it. There's also another new product that uses a floor mounted gyro (bluetooth) and gives you a simulated AHARS, pretty cool.

Re: Compass interference help
I had a big problem with compass correction when I installed my VOR just below the compass. I wrapped the VOR indicator with Mu-Metal and problem solved. Pretty good stuff. I first tried a sheet of copper which helped, but it didn't do nearly as good as this stuff. My biggest deviation on the compas...

Re: What have you done for your 170 today?
OK, so it wasn't today, but yesterday... Flew home from SoCal on an absolutely perfect day for flying. Went back with my Mrs. and "the wee one" to visit family for the weekend. Low temps, smooth as glass air, and no wind. Doesn't get much better.

Re: Cylinder Head Temps
I recently checked my #2 cyl head temp with the same spark plug gasket style unit temporarily installed (thanks Doug!). With OAT of 85, full power full rich climb to 5000ft showed a peak of 450-455. Cruise power full rich at 2000ft showed 375. Cruise power leaned at 2000ft showed 400. With your OATs...

Re: Low oil temps
I have a friend who is willing to loan me a capillary style gauge. I'll get that hooked up and let you know what happens.

Re: Low oil temps
Well, I made an attempt to be a little more scientific and fool proof today. I removed the oil temp probe and submerged it in water this time. Once the water was boiling, my Fluke meter was reading 208.9, while my oil temp gauge was reading 203. It seems that although I may be off by a few degrees, ...

Re: Grimes Rotating Beacon
In case anyone was interested, I just heard back from avliteaviation(.com), they have new grimes motors in stock for $325. Although it's actually cheaper than I expected, I think I'll wait till mine quits spinnin'.

Re: Grimes Rotating Beacon
Sorry, completely forgot to specify. It's a grimes. I've never seen anything wired this way. I suspect that is because of the vintage. The power lead comes in and splits to the motor and the light as expected. On the motor side, it goes into one side of a black cylinder (what I suspect is a capacito...

Re: Grimes Rotating Beacon
OK, someone enlighten me :!: What is wired in series with the 12V feed to the beacon motor (installed in the beacon housing)? I assume it is a capacitor, but I've only seen caps wired in parallel on DC motors. Is it just a diode? Whatever it is, what's it's purpose? The bearings on my motor are shot...

Re: Spinner Recommendations Requested
George, you mentioned "Cessna Kit, AK 7053-3" as approval for the bullet spinner on earlier models. Can you tell me what this is? I am replacing my cracked spinner with a new one from Wag-Aero and it says on it that it's only approved for the later models. I know I already have this instal...

Re: Low oil temps
I haven't noticed much of a difference in temp/press running full rich vs leaned out, but this is probably because I aways lean in every phase of flight. I lean until it's about to die on taxi and keep the egt around 1300 for climb out. I think that CHT will be a better indication of whether or not ...

Re: Hangar Floor Paint
I can tell you what I use in my elevator machine rooms. I finally found something other than "floor paint" that is quite durable and looks great. Home depot carries a 1part epoxy paint by Behr. I use slate grey color painting small areas at a time (maybe 5ft X 5ft). After each section, bef...
