Paid $980 for $40K hull on the 170B last August via Travers w/AIG
as the underwriter ($980 / $40K = 2.45% of hull value per year)

Just paid $1619 for $70K hull on the 180 via Travers / AIG again
($1619 / $70K hull = 2.31% of hull value per year)

I'll be there (somewhere in row eighteen) but in a silver (natural
aluminum) '53 C-180. I'll see if I can find y'all.

Not sequential in that the photographs were not taken on the same day. The waterskiing "attempt" was "successful" with no ill effects. The 170 in question was (sometime later) flipped over while landing on a gravel bar. The damage from said gravel bar landing wasn't that great, b...

Those pictures are not sequential (the 170 water-skiing and then the
same airplane flipped over on it's back). My neighbor is/was friends
with the subject aircraft owner and has "briefed me" on those shots.

Some well-known overhaulers take brand new cylinders (no matter where they come from) completely apart and "blueprint" them before hanging them on a customer's case (I think Quack does this). I have heard it is said that they always find "something" wrong that, un-corrected, woul...

Did you install the Real Gaskets push-rod retrofit kit? (O-470 style, spring-loaded pushrod tube arrangement). If so, the instructions warns about over-torquing the nuts that hold the pushrod base casting (what I think you're calling the flanges?). I don't have the instruction sheet handy, but the t...

Re: fastest 170

Going off memory...I think it was a 53 inch twist on the cruise prop?? (I could be completely wrong on that but I think that is what the owner told me...) Something doesn't smell right! At all the numbers were in MPH, if those numbers were knots it would truly be an extraordinary airplane! 135 MPH=...

Well, as per my original post in this thread.... The problem with everyone posting what/who/how much is.... we aren't all talking apples and apples. Several posts here mention liability being $1M/$100K , as if that's a standard matter. It's not. The first number is the total amount the underwriter ...

I helped recover the accident aircraft. The engine was 500+ yards away from the rest of the airplane. I have since heard of another 170 that landed without an engine at Felts Field near Spokane, Washington State (this reportedly happened years ago). It apparently shucked a blade in flight, and the r...

I agree that would make for a nice airplane. I have been contemplating between selling the 170 and buying and early (light) 180, doing the 210hp Continental conversion on the 170 (too expensive), or a Lyc 180hp C/S conversion. I'm leaning towards the latter, as I love the 170s looks & handeling,...

I have a Sportsman kit on my '54 (it was on there when I bought it). See: http://www.havasreti.com/images/sportsman_speeds.jpg I have trouble believing a 4mph *increase* in cruise speed as a result of installing the kit (?). The kit increases wing area, and therefore drag. I might buy that the cruis...

Why would you need another 337 to put 600x6s back on when those are covered under the type certificate? With this reasoning, if you did an alternator conversion under a 337 and the alternator failed a few years later in service, you'd have to submit for another field approval to put a replacement al...

I was actually thinking of fabricating replacement shrouds myself (they look fairly straight-forward, and I'm a passable sheet metal guy). The aft cover for the RH side would take a little more head-scratching to do, but it still looks doable. Would make for a good winter-time project when I don't h...

Just finished hanging the exhaust with the Knisley risers. Had no problems with fit / tolerances.... (?). The thing went right back together like the new parts had always been there. The upper feeder tubes to the muffler (where the lower portion of the risers goes in) were a bit out of round (too ma...
