Re: Your Top 10 Aviation movies of all time

Battle of Britain and Hell's Angels are all-time favourites.

Tora, Tora, Tora has to be paired with its sequel, Midway, to get the whole story.

Goose strike(s) make left flap go floppy

Looking for part no. 0525000 (flap assembly - wing - left) for a 1948 C170 -- could trade the floppy flap, if that's any help. These are the skinny simple hinge flaps. Are they interchangeable with 170A flaps? Anyway, although both options (replace/reskin) are basically equivalent, mechanic feels re...

Re: what is this??

Well, I'll be darned. I just looked an any pics I could find of other 170s, and as a couple have said the pipes are cut either more-er-less level, or slanting the other way! I can see that would make a difference. Well, that goes on the list to look at on next year's annual, as well as inspecting th...

Re: what is this??

Really? That would be a relief. Especially if it means I am "leaning it out right." ;-)

what is this??

See photo. I noticed this at Marathon on my way back from Thunder Bay to Ottawa, photo taken on arrival at Ottawa. It's a fine powdery residue that easily wipes off with a finger. Relevant facts: * Engine is Continental O-300D in a C170 * This is after 14 hours of flying over two days, no rain or an...

hard-wiring Grimes retractable landing light?

I just talked to my mechanic about my landing light problem. My 1948 170 has the Grimes retracting light under the left wing. It wasn't working -- extends and retracts no problem, but it doesn't come on when the light is extended. This spring he found the problem was the contactor that brings the la...

Re: New member alert...

I'd call it a "midshipman's hitch with two false starts." :D I see what you mean, third time's a charm for adding that final half hitch. ;-) The "false starts" really distribute any shock or load, & once you get the hang of it, it's very easy to tie and tension properly. You...

Re: New member alert...

From: http://www.fepco.com/BF.images.gentle.breeze.html The Hurricane Hitch Now that you have the bottom end of your rope attached to your anchor, and the top end has been reeved through the wing's tiedown ring with a slight amount of tension applied, the rope will need to be secured. The best syste...

New member alert...

Hi. I sent off my membership a few days ago by snail mail. I've been lurking for a couple of years, and found some useful info from the public parts of the site over that time -- so now I figure I should join. Better late than never, eh? ;-) My airplane is a 1948 C170, serial no. 18290, Canadian reg...
