Re: Flap Handle Detents

Thanks John, I have been doing a similar thing, but without the 10 notch I've just allowed the flaps to blow up to trail after adding takeoff power. Then, at the desired time/speed, reaching down to grab any portion of the handle (no need to hunt for the end of the handle up under the panel, since i...

Re: Flap Handle Detents

That was helpful. Thanks. Believe I'll go for the extra notch just for the extra 'arrow in my quiver,' Slow flight situations, and Feel like it'll be helpful in the pattern too. A more gradual slowing. I will try to find the drawing referred to in the forums, and any directions would be appreciated....

Re: Flap Handle Detents

Seems like acceleration would be improved with the lesser flaps. Also, with crosswinds it just seems like a better flap selection (10).

My 'Timeless Classic' book on page 10 indicates the change happened in 55 between 26505 & 26995.

Flap Handle Detents

Why would the flap handle on some 170B's have only three detents, with the first one being a very large flap deployment setting? Others have 4 detents providing more gradual flap use. What was Cessna's thinking on this design?

Re: Climb Prop Basics

Did you guys have any cht issues in max climb mode? The altitudes you reached sound 'useful'.

Re: Climb Prop Basics

Thank you, Aryana. Exactly the type input I was looking for. I keep hearing that about this/these engines - they work best when run hard. I like that. What's your ceiling at gross with your climb prop?

Climb Prop Basics

Just this week had my prop re-pitched to climb specs. o-300a/7651. I'm headed west from the southeastern flatlands. Did this last year, about now, and was underwhelmed by my 7655's performance. Actually, for that prop, we did quite well, but it was far too exciting for my taste. So, I thot I'd ask y...

Re: Gear Legs

She's a 51 and there's nothing in the forms or logs to indicate they are anything but original. So, what you say makes sense. So, I guess it's going to be shimmable. Wear from one side to the other is completely symmetric. Guess it's in my head. My IA is at SnF so he gets to weigh in in a few days. ...

Gear Legs

I've noticed, but until now, haven't really thot about the fact that the trade in gear legs is brisk. Do they 'wear out?' Why I recently began thinking about it is this. I think I've definitely noticed my tires beginning to assume a more 'de-cambered' stance. And the tires are just beginning to show...

Re: Comm Radio Reception Issue

Hi John, The coax was fine. And ONE of the two connectors was good, one bad. The antenna connector was poorly done. Replaced it and it's been the way we want our radios ever since. Like you, I've been essentially NORDO since I bot the airplane and immediately installed the SL40. Have you tried the '...

Re: Comm Radio Reception Issue

Problem would seem to be solved. Coax. Known good one - WHEN PROPERLY SEATED!!! - seems to have solved the problem. Haven't flown it, but it ground tested great. Loud and clear, as they say. So, it appears the installed coax has a connector issue which I'll be isolating and fixing. Been that way sin...

Re: Comm Radio Reception Issue

MAN! That is truly a corroded terminal! Looks like had been under water. Sea water. Amazing how well things will work even in conditions approaching that. As long as they aren't 'disrupted.' Which is why I've always thought over-maintaining is a big problem. Just me. You make a great point on the 'k...

Re: Comm Radio Reception Issue

No, Fred, it was a pretty quick checkout. But, this was a first-class facility. Never seen so many scopes. Guy knows his stuff. Don't think it's heat related anymore, but that was a good thought. What I now know is that no one can hear me and I can't hear anyone. Had a guy take my handheld and start...

Re: Comm Radio Reception Issue

Bad day by some metrics, but...I made the same number takeoffs as landings, so how bad can it have really been. Radio bench checks GOOD! That was good news. Got a length of coax, known good, and put between pigtail and antenna. Took off. Worse than ever. Can you believe that? Next is hook up to a kn...
