You could install an electric winch in the back of the hangar and use the winch to pull your plane into the hangar. You can also install a flush attachment point out in the apron in front of your plane, install a temporary pulley, and use the winch to reverse pull the plane out of the hangar. -- David

Is, in fact, an AFM required in the C-170?? I recall that for that vintage aircraft, all you need on board is the Equipment List / W & B and the required markings / placards / etc. -- David

Don't you guys worry about having your high-cost liability/hull insurance proceeds cancelled when your insurance company discovers after the accident that the plane is not legal/properly certificated? The insurance company would just love to discover such a nonconformance item. -- David

Static Fires

I beg to differ with the statement that one can't get out of a car without grounding/bonding him/herself to the car. In my two cars, an Odyssey minivan and Miata, I frequently get out of the car and walk around to the other side of the car and get a big static discharge when I touch the car. With al...

Aeroshell Recall??

Several years back, there was a recall / warning that some plastic bottles of aviation oil (I think it was AeroShell) had been filled with box sealing glue at the factory and somehow got shipped out as oil. It only involved a bottle or two so you had to make sure the stuff you poured into your aircr...

Vernier Mixture and Throttle

We have vernier throttle, mixture, and prop controls in our company F33A. I've gotten used to them and like the way you can fine-tune the settings. Of course, "fine-tuning" a C-145-2/O-300 is a bit of an oxymoron... Also, some folks still don't seem to be able to get the hang of a vernier ...

Surface Corrosion on Outer Skin

The interior surfaces are very good - very little surface corrosion is evident (this will be the tenth plane I've owned over the past 35 years, so I've looked at a lot of doggy planes in that time). If I aluma prep/alodine the exterior, does this process change the color of the aluminum or does it r...

Surface Corrosion on Outer Skin

I'm looking at a '54 170B that is for sale. It has been sitting unused in a hangar for over 25 years. The only noticeable corrosion is widespread, light surface corrosion on the unpainted portions of the skin - nothing deep, just a light powder coating - the Alclad layer may be slightly etched. At s...

Forced Landing Article

Lot's to think about here. Sliding the front seat back facilitates the front seat passenger's debarkation, but may impede the rear seat passengers' ability to deplane quickly. Also, a fully slid back front seat may result in a shoulder harness angle that is not optimum. I like to keep a few of those...

Panel Post Lights

Keep in mind that some panel instruments are not well lighted by these kinds of ring lights. We installed a set of these ring lights in our F33A and were very disappointed with the poor illumination given to "deeply set" instruments such as the Attitude Gyro". The ring lights did not ...

IFR Training in a Cessna 170?

Some considerations regarding equipping your C170 for IFR include: 1. Generator /alternator capacity - An alternator is superior to a generator especially when it comes to those long, low RPM delays at the runup pad waiting for your IFR clearance and release. Watch the generator capacity as well - s...
