Re: URGENT COWL DOOR INSPECTION NOTICE

When I looked at this photo the other day I realized it clearly showed my cowl door backup latch. The 10-32 knob threads into a rivnut. Jake

Re: URGENT COWL DOOR INSPECTION NOTICE

I have modified both my cowling doors with a backup safety system and the doors do not move in flight. This is after experiencing a door springing open at cruise. At the top of each door, at the midpoint of the overlap and in the center of the door, I installed a 3/16 rivnut. I then drilled a mating...

Re: URGENT COWL DOOR INSPECTION NOTICE

My cowl access door has popped in flight as well, fortunately with no damage. I simply slowed up to about 70 and landed. I have seem a secondary latch installed that is simple and effective. A 10-32 rivnut was installed on the piece of the door that slips under. A 10-32 thumb screw knob hole was dri...

Re: More Axle Questions

Cessna170driver has pointed out the the AN363 nut has more square inches in shear since the metal fingers have structual strength. The first people that I know of who swiched the nuts were the mechanics for Maine Fish and Game. They had experienced some failures with 180s and 185s and reasoned that ...

Re: More Axle Questions

If you choose to install a steel axle, let me suggest that you DO use NAS hardware. That hardware is specified by Cessna for the steel axle installation on the 180. I have personally seen AN axle attachment bolts stretched to a small remaining neck when used with steel axles for off airport operatio...

Re: climb prop question

Keith, I have both a 80/46 and a 80/42 for my 53 170B with 180 gear, 8:00 tires and a 0-300A. The 80/42 gives me a cruise speed of 90/95 mph at 2450/ 2500 RPM which is where I've run it for years. The climb performance is excellent. I use the prop, not for extended climbs, but for get up and go. It ...

Re: Steel Axles

The last time I checked the NTSB records 20 incidents had been reported involving 170 axle failures. Often the part number of the axle was not given in the report. However, even if the part number is given, that does not tell the complete story. Early axles, both hollow and solid, were machined from...

Re: 180 Gear STC

George, The reason I went to the trouble to get the axle STC in 2003 was that in our FAA region, the Feds would not grant a field approval for the steel axle, part 1441003-1, for my 170B. That axle was designed as the heavy duty option for the early 180s and was not specified for the 170. They took ...
