If the race can not be removed with a hammer and punch, take a small welding rod and weld a bead around the inside of the race. Be careful not to weld any where but the race. Cool This will shrink the race and it will easily tap out. It does not take a lot of heat for this. Don't get carried away.

When you receive a new main spring that has less angle/bend than the 62 year old stack , you might draw the conclusion that the originals were not stressed down. I have no concerns altering the upper angle of a cold bend in a spring that is not heat treated. It does have the strength of four stacked...

I just went through the same problem. I had to increase the bend in the angle so it would match correctly with the three shorter springs that were not replaced. My instructor has 21,000 hrs. 5000 hrs in conventional gear aircraft. 2 hrs in a 170A. Perhaps I should have settled for the 150.

On a calm day what would be the speed and flap settings you would like to have for a student pilot to land. I have no time in any aircraft. My instructor has no time in a stock 170A.
