Re: Next obstacle to flying - Fuel Strainer

Thanks for the quick reply! Last question, I promise on this hijack... So what holds the screens in place? I am not at the hangar now but from what I remember the two screens were glued to the upper seal. When I started tinkering I found that the screens would not stay in place on the down tube once...

Re: Next obstacle to flying - Fuel Strainer

Does anyone have pics of this spring clip on the gascolator screen? Or a part number? Does this clip keep both screens up on the center post?
Thanks,
Phillip
PS Sorry for the hijack.

Re: Next obstacle to flying - Fuel Strainer

I'm looking at BeeMans pics of his strainer and wondering how the secondary screen actually attaches. Mine is glued on though it does not look original. I don't see it even listed in my 170A parts catalog. It is shown in the 100 series manual.

batteries

I recommend using the right battery for the application. I worked for an old crop duster who ran a fat agcat 331. He loved to buy walmart batteries because he could use them for a month and walmart would replace them for free. Seemed to work well (yea right!) other than the warped and melted battery...

I am always amazed at the differeces between fsdo's. It is like the differences between tsa, customs, and immigration at different parts of the country. No standardization. At least I know that in Mexico I have to pay 5 people to get back out of the country and the more I tip the faster it gets done!

I was working for the man. I fly Beechjets in my other life....work for Flight Options. I am currently in Alaska on vacation and wishing I had flown 42c up here. Very jealous of all these northern latitude pilots! Saw some really nice 170's around Lake Hood (you guys know who you are!)

Pretty wheel landing at KBFI

I was taxiing out this morning for work when I saw 1WB make a beautiful touchdown. Nice job! I like the red and white paint scheme. We then stopped in S21 and I saw 3160A. Wish I had had more time to hang out. Shiny side up,

Congratulations

Glad to see your back in the air. I have considered an overhaul myself but feel I would take too long to get 42c back in the air. Seems like my annuals keep getting longer to do and I'm sure that is an indication. Thanks for the running commentary and pics, it has been enjoyable to follow. Shiny sid...

Round Motors still make my head turn!

As a former DC-3 freighter with a little BE-18 time and a lot of busted knuckles turning wrenches I still get a hankering for that sound and smell. My BE-40 is just not the same. The 170a is the only thing that keeps me in turbines for a paycheck except maybe that safety and reliability thing! Phillip

Screws

I agree with some of the others concerning stainless screws. I have had enough of those freeze, break, or strip that I will avoid installing them. It is a pain to remove old rusty screws, but it is a nightmare to remove stainless when it sticks. Stainless is very hard so you will ruin multiple drill...

Density Altitude

If I could just get my hands on some first, second, and third segment charts maybe I could land the old girl on top of Everest and takeoff......I guess I will have to recertify above 15500' first! Maybe I will need that dual TSIO-360 field approval after all.... Seriously, I would like to hear about...

weather

I usually pick most stuff off of fltplan.com. Seems to work pretty well and the planning tools helpful. The best part is I can file and get weather on my blackberry. It is still hard to beat a real voice on the FSS line for information if you can stand the wait. Phillip

Density Altitude

I agree with performance changing in regards to the setting of the flap position on the takeoff roll at high density altitude. The manual states that the shortest roll will be with flaps in the second notch. My experience this past trip was that I could get airborne at gross 6900' elevation at 65 de...

Density Altitude

Miles, I got off the ground just fine in about 3200' but I remained about 50' off the deck till I was at the end of the runway. I used the second notch but she does not like to accelerate with that much or climb that well so I build a little steam and drop to the first notch. I was climbing initiall...

Density Altitude

Just returned from my trip out West; Knoxville, TN to Page, AZ. The old 170 does pretty well as long as you pay attention and always stay conservative. We flew into Las Vegas, NM on the second day. The field sits at 6900' and has 8200' of pavement. Tougher getting in with the remnants of the hurrica...
