Re: Removal of wing struts, "V" struts
Thank you for the tips. The wings came off in less than an hour. They are now sitting in a 2 x 4 cradle I threw together as the bolts were coming off. I am sure putting them back on will be more of an ordeal.

Re: Removal of wing struts, "V" struts
Thanks, we will have all hands on deck. I have some scaffolding I will set up under the wing with a mattress on top. Then I built a wing cradle to hold the wings, leading edge down in a carpet sling.

Removal of wing struts, "V" struts
Removing the wings from my 1948 Cessna. I have all cables, wires, fuel lines disconnected and all fittings loose except the lower wing strut bolts which I can just feel through the two small access holes in the cabin floor. Any tricks or tips?

Re: Pattern procedures
Members. Thank you, thank you, and don't let this thread die! I find it exciting to read and transform myself into the cockpit with my hand on the throttle and dropping my hand to the flap handle. You know, it is to me like learning to ride a unicycle or learning to roll a kayak, twenty people can t...

I sure do like the attention I get when I roll in for fuel at the FBO. Been using Nuvite. http://i624.photobucket.com/albums/tt32 ... 63ff4b.jpg It is a 48 with cloth wings.

Re: Pattern procedures
Josh, I read that loud and clear! I am looking for a "Baseline" to develop an an understanding of the aircraft. I am fairly confident of my Cub skills and would like to get as comfortable in the 170.

Pattern procedures
I got my tail wheel training recently in a 65 HP Cub and I have been doing some pattern work in an 85HP stroked Cub. But I need some pattern procedures in my 48 stock 170 to work on and then modify to suit me and my aircraft. I tried 2000 RPM on 500' AGL downwind at end of runway with one notch of f...

I prefer the Lowe's paint mixing sticks over the Home Depot sticks.

Re: Wheel Pants
Thanks for the photo, that is about the clearance I have. I am going to remove them and inspect the tire. I have less than a fingers width where you are guessing 1/4" so I may be OK. One of the inspection plates popped off when brakes were inadvertently applied on landing so an inspection is wa...

Wheel Pants
My 48 170 has polished aluminum wheel pants with an inspection plate. There appears to be very little clearance between the tire and the outboard rear of the pant. Is there a spec on this? I am afraid that expansion of the tire from landing could cause sidewall failure.

Re: Fuel Gauges
New guy, so bear with me, my 48 170 came with a brand new fuel gauge that is kept behind the seat. It looks a lot like a paint stir stick and is marked on one side for right tank and the other side for left tank. Seems to work. I did an N number search and two prior owners did not know how to use it.
