Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Looking forward to removing the wing(s).
I called AirRepair yesterday to ask about the tailwheel bracket availability. They stopped selling the individual part and now only sell a kit. Danny, I think it was, stated he doesn't know exactly what's in the kit (O..K... ), but it's $675.

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Dang Richard, you didn't have to go and pull your wing off just to show me what it looks like! Now I feel bad...
Let's hope mine looks half as nice.

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Jim suggested removing the wing for the front, might as well do that and check them all. The team here in Auburn, as did Tom, suggested drilling a 1/2" hole and trying to boroscope initially, though I have been warned it may yield low grade results. But at least I can see if I should go further...

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Thanks Bruce.
Since I'm at it, what's the best way to examine the rear spar carry-through and its rivets? I guess I'd have to remove the headliner completely?

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Jim, I have been extremely fortunate to have a very understanding and patient, but demanding, IA directing everything I do. I work outdoors because there are no hangars available and if there were, they'd range from $450-800/mo. Can't do it. We do have T-hangars available, which would help quite a b...

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Before you go spending a lot of money getting a second-opinion...(it appears your present inspector is actually a bearer of good-news in disguise...he's found stuff that can cause serious injury/wreckage ...and needs a congratulatory pat-on-the-back and the previous guys need a kick in the pants.) ...

Here is a photo. You are looking at the starboard side of the top of the door post/spar carry through, looking up.The backside of the rivets are still there, for what it's worth....

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Yeah, I think at this juncture I will go with the repair option. You do have to admit though, those bolts do add a certain ruggedness to the tail... Thanks for pointing that out. There are a number of repairs that were done to the craft a long time ago that are perfectly acceptable, but a bit shoddy...

Re: New tachometer questions

Well, I assumed a tachometer was a plug-n-play device. I took out the original one, connected the new one and away I went. I was using the same tach cable as before. Was that not a good thing...? This is not a owner/pilot operation. It is an A&P job. Thanks for that. I will continue using the o...

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Thanks guys. Attached is a shot further out. We talked about a doubler for the bulkhead, too. The bracket appears to have been welded previously, but I can't tell until I remove it and prep it. Tom, the IA said three rivets were missing. I asked if he saw any corrosion in the spar or anywhere in tha...

Re: So close, so close and yet so far...

Part numbers, as far as I know: 0512108-3 Bulkhead fuselage aft Section station 228-687 and 0512125-1 bracket assembly tail wheel mount. As stated, it seems these two issues plague the 170 owner, and this appears to be nothing new. Looking at all the bolts, rivets and material in the affected area, ...

So close, so close and yet so far...

Sorry if the title brings back awkward memories of roller skating to the Bee Gees.... I took everyone's advice and went to the airport to day to get 5448C annual'd so that I can quit messing around and fly her. Everything was going well until the IA looked at the back end of the plane. The rudder, p...
