Re: Cotter pin in oil pan

Maybe pull a single cylinder use a borescope to inspect the rods. Might be tricky but it could work. Also, it looks like your missing a part of the broken cotter key.

Re: Replacement oil pressure line

It is a really good idea to check your flexible oil line and replace periodically. I just removed the flexible line on my 120 and the fittings were extremely loose and I am shocked it didn't bust and dump oil overboard. I should have replaced this hose much earlier and feel lucky I didn't have a pro...

Oil Temp Bulb Safety

Should the oil temp bulb be safetied? Mine isn't drilled for safety wire. The housing it screws into is safetied just not the bulb itself. Ive always wondered about it. I put torque seal on it so I can visually see if it has loosened.

Thoughts?

Re: Silver Anodizing

Thanks! That is the exact type of lead I was looking for. I’ll put a call in tomorrow and see what he has to say. Appreciate it!

Depending on how much it costs maybe I’ll see about putting a list together for the 170 as well.

Re: Silver Anodizing

I’m just talking about the color silver. I want to remove the current gold colored hardware and have it plated so it appears silver in color. Basically anything that is visible when it’s sitting on the ramp. I’ll do some more interweb digging and see what I can find. My first attempt didn’t yield an...

Silver Anodizing

How would one go about getting silver anodized hardware? Is this something you could do yourself with the right chemicals and know how? The gold anodizing doesn’t look right and is not period appropriate. This is for my other project, not the 170.

Re: Maintenance Induced Emotional Roller Coaster

Glad you got her flying. Old airplanes will give you a lot of ups and downs for sure. Eventually the ups will start to outweigh the downs! Stick with it and consider it the price you pay to really take ownership of your bird. Getting to know your new machine is an important part of the ownership exp...

Re: Front Side Window Replacement

Thanks for all the great advice. I was able to get the hinge pins out by using a drift to enlarge the holes. After I did that, the pins slid right out. Having the window off the airplane made things a lot easier, and I was able to clean and polish everything. Once off, the disassembly was pretty str...

Re: Front Side Window Replacement

Thanks. I'll give it a shot and see if I can get them out without drilling the top rivets. I appreciate the info, exactly what I was thinking would work. I'll post an update when I get it done.

Re: Front Side Window Replacement

Yeah, it’s been done before. They are cherry max. I was the dummy who used cherry max rivets when I replaced a hinge a few years ago. Guess I’ll just have to grind off the rivet heads and go for it.

Front Side Window Replacement

Does anyone have any tips for replacing the front window glass on a 1950 170A? From looking at it, I assume the window has to come off, the rivets have to be drilled out, glass replaced, and reinstalled. Cherry max rivets were used all around and the hinges have the ends crimped, so the hinge pin ca...

Re: Mixture Cable Caution

I was hoping I could just go to my favorite salvage yard (Faeth Aircraft) and find a replacement cable......no luck. Those ugly salmon colored knobs seem to be like hens teeth. Here is how I repaired my old cable. I cut the wire off my old knob, drilled out the rod to accept the new wire I found at ...

Mixture Cable Caution

IMG_4541.JPG Just wanted to give you guys a heads up what I found with my mixture cable. The end of the cable had split where it attaches to the carburetor. This was the original cable and survived 70 years. Glad I found it. It would be something good for you all to take a close look at during your...
