Re: Generator seal leak - Better alternative seal?

Good input. The sealing surface was inspected and no scratches, pits, or groves. I replaced the generator bearings. I suspect it is the shaft as the internal area of the generator is oily. Will be ordering parts to do again. If no comment on what seal is best, will order whatever they have.

Generator seal leak - Better alternative seal?

Sorry for bringing this well worn topic up again. I am about to attempt to fix my leaking generator again for the 3rd time. To start off with, the following has been done: 1) Using a one piece gasket 2) The drive gear sealing surface has been checked for defects 3) The open side of the seal is facin...

Re: Rubber Gaskets under gear leg covers

53 170B. I get exhaust smell on base to final with the heat on. I installed gear seals during the rebuild. Reskinned the door and new seals so all is good there. I suspect that my fumes are coming in from the hole for the struts as there is no seal. It is as a direct hole to the interior as the gear...

Re: Fuselage oil canning

My 170 skin has a tendancy to oil can a bit there when the aluminum is hot (sun). I cut a length of L shaped aluminum extrusion (yes hardware store) and epoxied it to the underneath side. No drilling or riveting thus no altering of the airframe and no paperwork. Worked great.

Re: Rough running engine

Been through this also. After chasing my tail for several months, it was the first thing I checked, intake leak. Take the elbow off and true up the surface with oiled sandpaper on a flat steel plate. New gassket and don't over tighten and bend again. My leak was on the back side where it could not b...

blueldr, you aren't kidding, it sure was a long haul. Should also metion that this final problem was masked early on with an ignition problem. Nicked p-lead causing an occasional grounding. Hope to enjoy the thing now. Next problem is son number one wants wants a key now.......

Re: O300A right front cylinder not firing at idle

and now for the rest of the story............ Weather finally broke and allowed me to tackle this issue again. Is finally fixed. If you recall in early posts, I did check for intake leaks. Found none although it had all the symptoms of one. I pulled the cylinder assy off with the cast elbow still in...

Re: O300A right front cylinder not firing at idle

Answer in regards to leads and plugs, Yes I did undo the leads and spin the engine over. Spark was there. Also removed plugs and hooked up to wires. Spark was there. Have received some good tips that I will look into. We just got dumped on again here in North Ohio so it will be a bit until I can get...

Re: O300A right front cylinder not firing at idle

First of all, thanks a lot for the suggestions! Yes the cam was inspected, processed and tagged by a reputable shop so it is not worn. Also verified again when I had this cylinder back off looking for this very thing and anything else I could find. I will check the dry tappet clearance. It has all t...

Re: O300A right front cylinder not firing at idle

Same problem with the harness, plugs, and mags that were originally on it. Mags were overhauled by a shop previous. They went out of business since then. I sent these mags recently to a new shop and it turns out that there were many problems and ADs not complied with. Was cost prohibitive to repair ...

Re: O300A right front cylinder not firing at idle

Plug wires verified correct from each mag to each cylinder. Top and bottom, The only other wild idea is can a lifter pump up ok to give the impression all is well at static but actually not hold pressure at lower rpms and lower oil pressure but be ok at higher rpms? This would give the effect of del...

O300A right front cylinder not firing at idle

Need some help diagnosing an engine problem with my O300A. Problem is the right front cylinder is cold (not firing) when at idle. The cylinder comes on line after about 1500 rpm. High RPM operation is normal when flying around. Upon return to low rpm the cylinder again drops out. Additional info: En...

This has been on my mind a lot also as this accident occurred in my area. I have flown off of this strip quite a few times and yes, with family members. Two boys, just like this dad did. Son number one just got his private ticket. Son number 2 is itching to get his. As sad as this was, it has been a...
