Re: 170 performance

I would be leary about operating out of 1400 ft of grass with 2 adults and 2 kids. I used to fly into a 900 ft ultralite strip with my 170B with a Horton STOL kit. By myself with no more than 1/2 tanks, it was OK. I did it once with another big guy in the right seat and it was another story. Better ...

Re: NTSB Final Report: Bruce and Kathy Rymes accident

Years ago I tried a slip with full flaps in my B model with a Horton STOL kit. I did it at altitude to be safe. There is a reason that this is not recommended. The nose dropped suddenly. Had I done this close to the ground like on final it might have been ugly.

Re: Take-off to clear obstacle. Whats your method?

Obviously many opinions on the best method. Personal experience with a 54 B with a Horton STOL kit. Start the takeoff roll with no flaps, when the tail will come up, raise it about half way and at 50 mph indicated grab 20 degrees of flap. The plane would levitate enough to clear 50 ft at which point...

Re: Towing a 170 on main wheels

Several years ago we moved a Howard DGA-15 about 25 miles using the tailwheel as a hitch. A custom mount was bolted to the bed of the tow vehicle. The move was done at 6am on a Sunday with speeds not exceeding 45 mph. A police escort was provided by a friend. Good preparation and planning resulted i...

spot landing contest

IMHP Bruce still holds the record for the best short field landing at Petit Jean several years ago. AR Dave posted a video of his landing. I am looking forward to visiting with old friends at Petit Jean this year.

handpropping can be dangerous

It's possible this is a photoshop job but I have seen many Beech 18's with this many people outside on jump run. It is standard practice to get 3or 4 outside to make the exit faster. There is a front floater in front of the door, a rear floater and two in the door facing in. There is usually a handr...

handproping can be dangerous

In my skydiving days, I thought I had seen it all. It is not uncommon to have multiple people outside the aircraft for exit, but with one engine shut down, they have a good pilot. I don't know about the guy on the prop, he is wrapped too tight.

looking for greg howard

If you are looking for Greg Howard the donut man, he passed away about 10 years ago in a midair collision near West Memphis while flying one of his 170's. Mr Howard, as he was known was a fine gentleman and is missed by the Memphis aviation community. Mr Howard had numerous planes, including 2 170's...

accessory case

I had mine repaired by Drake in Tulsa. The threads where the oil filter adapter attached were gauled. The made it look new. As for a crack, I don't know. Give them a call.

O300 C Overhaul

Yes, the through bolts are expensive, but it would not be wise to reuse an old one. I acquired mine from Aircraft Specialty Services in Tulsa where all of the internal engine parts were overhauled. The are next door to Divco(case overhauler) and can supply Continental or Superior parts. I shopped ar...

Piston Weight

When we overhauled my C145, I ordered a balanced set of pistons with the Continental cylinder kits. Being a sceptic, I weighed the pistons and my memory tells me that they weighed 695 grams +/- 1 gram. I thought that was pretty close. The overhauled engine with the balanced pistons and rods and cran...

Cessna Gust Lock

I am on the hunt for an original Cessna gust lock for a 170. The gust lock connects to the yoke and rudder pedals and has a tab on thefloor that supports it. I understand that they are scarce. Does anyone know where one might be and what they are worth?

engine overhaul

If you enjoy getting your hands dirty, I suggest doing the overhaul yourself. You will need an A&P who is engine savy to assemble the engine for you. An engine overhaul is a collection of overhauled components done by outside companys and the new parts that go with it.. There is no reason that a...
