I have 800's and single puck clevelands. Anything larger and I would have needed spacers. I did notice some loss of braking but managable. I occasionally land off airport. If I was just landing on cut grass, asphalt or smooth gravel runways I would go back to 600's Better braking, a couple more mph,...

Take off
I just figured my take off distance to clear a 50 ft obstacle using the chart and at 75 degs at 1000ft msl about 2050ft at gross. Ground roll is about 820ft on hard surface. That matches my experience on the 1500 ft grass if I add on a factor for the short grass and not hard surface. I also never fl...

I pulled mine off last wed while I still had enough snow to land at RNH.

I flew out of my neighbors strip for several years and it was 1500 ft long, grass, cut regularly, farm crops all the way around, no obstacles except when the corn was 9 ft tall. I have a 1950 A with the C145, the prop is a climb prop and I don't know the numbers off hand, just that it is not a cruis...

cargo hooks MAF
Gary I also heard about the rope and clip attachments from the mechanic who has been working on my 170 for years. An ex MAF pilot and mechanic. He helped find what was left of Nate Saints aircraft. Bill Clapp I also met Steve Saint. He stopped by in WI. to pick up a PA14. We told him how to find Flo...

I also disconnected the parking break. But on another issue last year during the annual we found that the brackets that hold the master cylinders to the fire wall were both cracked. One was ready to fall off of the fire wall. I can't remember the exact location that the brackets fastened but I think...

Cold weather
The coldest I have flow in was -20 in an Aeronca Chief, long ago. In my 170 -10 deg f is about it if I don't have to go any place special. - 25 or colder I don't go any time. But this is NW WI. not AK. I always pre heat the engine in the winter It is difficult to keep the oil temp up. I have a survi...

carb heat
I have done both so to speak 1. Carb heat on entering down wind and turn it off after turning final in case of a go around. 2. Now I don't use carb heat at all unless I suspect carb ice, other than checking it for drop prior to take off. Does anybody use carb heat to see if they have not leaned out ...
