Re: Windows 8, Windows 8, what about it we don't apprectiate

I cheated John...I had a laptop which let me plug in my sightings and it did all the rest. I figured I wanted to learn how to use the sextant, not practice my math! Ah! So your point that the batteries never run out, while true, was a little disingenuous, wasn't it? Now, go get yourself a...

The HF version seems to be purely decorative, not a precision device. I think I'd want to check out the filters very carefully before shooting the sun with it!

Re: Windows 8, Windows 8, what about it we don't apprectiate

Best thing ever is being offshore far enough in a little sailboat where there is no more cell service. I've even turned off the GPS and tried my hand at celestial navigation. Fun stuff and I can get within 1/10 of a mile accuracy with my cheapo sextant. Batteries never run out and it always has ser...

You probably have this already, but it's the best thing I can find.

Re: Windows 8, Windows 8, what about it we don't apprectiate

Well, I think I must be from a different planet. I recently bought an Acer laptop for 400 bucks with Windows 8, because Microsoft has dropped support for XP. I made friends with 8 pretty quickly after installing Classic Start, an open-source freebie that gives you what ever kind of start button you ...

Re: leaning procedures and EGT

I don't want to hijack the thread, George, and I do believe you're right in all respects about leaning. I've heard Darryl Bolduc say, if I remember right, that there's no way you can harm these old Continental engines by over-leaning (assuming CHTs don't become excessive). I always apply carb heat b...

Re: leaning procedures and EGT

Wow, George! I agree with almost everything you said, except that leaving the mixture leaned through landing is really radical, and contradicts what almost everybody has been taught. GUMPS! "Red, blue, green, runway's clean" on final, etc. I expect an instructor would hear from the examine...

Re: Flight Controls Free / Active

It's good practice to check flight controls before starting the engine. Reasons: you can hear things like little noises from binding cables, hinges, and whatnot; and, if you have left a control lock in place, you're still on the ramp with the engine quiet -- attracts less attention to your mistake, ...

Yesterday I returned my J3 Cub to the site of its first US Navy duty in 1942. This is what remains of NAS Hutchinson, Kansas. (On the charts it's the Sunflower Gliderport, privately owned now.) So glad the glider clubs maintained a runway for me to use! :D

Re: Seat and locking part dimension questions.

George is right. In my original installation, the reel was defective -- it wouldn't release at all. Cessna was aware of the problem, and they replaced it. That could be a safety issue in an emergency.

Re: Seat and locking part dimension questions.

I had the free secondary seat stop installed on my 170, and glad I did. But if you have one, during every preflight inspection, give the strap a good yank to make sure the reel is locked, and do it again with the locking pin resting on top of the seat rail. I found the reel release adjustment can ch...

Re: Gear up landing in a fixed gear aircraft

I sometimes see low, flat approaches over the road at my airport (Lake Elmo, MN, 21D). Why scare the people in cars and trucks like that? Our 170B and later model Cessnas have wonderful slotted flaps that permit a relatively steep approach, followed by a landing at minimum speed. We should use them!...

Re: Destroyed cylinders

Another possibility on those cylinders is if that shop is as corrupt like it looks, they may have been perfectly good cylinders and if they needed some for another job, they just stole them. I don't know what is worse, destroying someone else's property or stealing it. Not making any accusations, j...
