Re: Dents forming in the wing from the sun

I wasn’t blaming VGs at all… I was considering that SOME leading edges are installed OVER the original leading edge….and that might be identified by virtue of having VGs attached. (This L.E. certainly does not look like the “over-laid” one’s I’ve seen.)

Re: Firewall Sealant

Despite the “correctness” of whichever sealant is used…. I can’t imagine it makes any difference whatsoever if a blazing engine compartment fire develops in-flight. Any in-flight fire …should provoke the thought that “This airplane now belongs to the insurance company…and it’s my job to get it on th...

Re: Dents forming in the wing from the sun

By chance has it ever been re-fueled using a gas-can…held by someone who rested their elbow on top of the leading-edge…perhaps causing a dent…which sometimes “flexes” due to temperature changes…?? When refueling it’s important to not use the thin-skins to support hoses or other…. (although I have no...

Re: Turn & Bank Indicator

It is likely* powered by a self-reset circuit breaker mounted beneath/behind the panel…which looks like a small1-inch round black bakelite hockey-puck. It usually also powers the stall warning. Check to see if your stall warning horn/light works…. if so, it’s probably not the C.B. (On the other-hand...

Re: Thoughts on Upcoming Annual

Bob, here are pics of three types of aluminum axles…. several views of them. In the Top pic, you can see the two different styles of hollow on the right…versus the solid axle on the left. The very FIRST type of hollow axle issued (not pictured) had only AN5 bolts on all Four attach points….(all 4 ho...

Re: Thoughts on Upcoming Annual

Hollow $teel axles are certainly stronger than any aluminum axles…including the solid aluminum, so-called “ski” axles (which EveryOne should have at the very minimum. If anyone has hollow Aluminum axles they should replace them with either solid aluminum or hollow $teel.) However, Bob, I would not r...

Re: Memorial Day - the Most Expensive Holiday

Here’s some Memorial Day visuals… Imagine …you’re a conscripted soldier…told to sit on a wooden box in a throw-away wood-and-fabric glider … guided by a two-week-wonder glider-pilot…. to be towed and abandoned over unknown territory …hopefully to survive a once-in-a-lifetime landing on a non-airport...

Memorial Day - the Most Expensive Holiday

The real meaning of the Memorial-Day holiday is meant to honor all U.S. soldiers who have Died serving their country…. Who gave up the Most Precious Possession they had. (Veterans Day celebrates those who have Served.) Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day's history goes back to the Civil ...

Re: Tailwheel tie down ring - winch point

A full-stall landing will almost always result in the tailwheel touching down first,..at least it does when I attempt it with full flaps.

Gerald…did you read the most recent issue of 170 News.. ?

Steve Grimsley wrote a very good article on this very subject of re-sealing your Delco-Remy starter (pg 14): https://cessna170.org/download/24/170-n ... 2024-2.pdf

Re: Throttle repair question

That split-ring is for assembly during manufacture.

Yes, if you applied silicone that likely removed the friction the split-ring is intended to provide. Alcohol or electronic cleaner might restore it.

Re: Tailwheel tie down ring - winch point

MIles is describing the correct set-up angle of the “Kingpin” …. To avoid “shimmy”….the Kingpin angle should be as illustrated by the GREEN line… not the red lines. (one of the few times Green is Good on a 170) This angle is established by the tailwheel Main Leaf Spring. If yours is sagging, t...
