Textron Extends Warranty on Parts

I’ve rec’d an email from Textron (Cessna, Beech, etc) that a New Warranty Policy has been instituted… that Parts bought from Textron are now Warranted for 12 months… increased from the previous policy of 6-months. That’s nice. It still doesn’t mean any of us will be able to purchase engine mount bus...

Re: Cessna 170A Restoration w/TLGW Cont IO-360 STC

One other item to consider while you have it in process is a new windshield. Not a huge task, but I'm sure it would be easier depending on your state of disassembly. I'm also a big fan of the door stewards I added. Super easy and great for a tail dragger. I left the door catch at the top of the doo...

Re: Cessna 170A Restoration w/TLGW Cont IO-360 STC

The 180/185 gear adds 11-14 lbs of weight. I wouldn’t like that…but most folks who go to the IO-360 are so impressed by the horsepower/performance increase …I think they disregard/forget about that. But remember… the Gross Weight is not allowed to be increased…so the modifications Really Eat into th...

Re: different engines in 170's

Ghostflyer mentioned that the engine came from an L-19. The L-19 came with two versions of the O-470. The O-470-11 or -11B used a fix pitch prop. The O-470-15 used the constant speed prop. 391 lbs. and 408 lbs. dry weight respectively according to the TCDS. Researching the FAA database for the C-17...

Re: Cabin Heat Conversion

Since I’m working on a 1964 172, I was wondering if that air system had been installed successfully since it allows for both hot and outside air to be mixed in the cabin. If you look at the IPC for the 1963-1974 Skyhawk, figure 138, item 41, the external air vent on the passenger/copilot side of th...

Re: Cabin Heat Conversion

Reviving an older thread due to the content here… Has anyone successfully installed a later 172-style fresh air vent on the right/copilot side of the fuselage as part of a heater upgrade? You’ll have to be more specific (at least for me to understand) what you mean.. Are you meaning the fresh-air “...

Re: Oil Pressure Gauge

(I know this isn’t what you’re asking….) I once replaced such a gauge…and to keep the original look…. used a knife-blade to peel up the rim, slip the glass aside…. swapped out the face behind the needle… reassembled. https://baspartsales.com/2525-5-168-rochester-mfg-oil-pressure-ind/?gad_source=4&am...

Re: Piston Rings for Chrome Cylinders

Likely a “superceded” part number situation…. AND another example of how an “online auciton” site can be problematical when sourcing parts. That PN 693394 is available at the same price directly from a more reliable source….AircraftSpruce/Superior….. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/co...

Re: CS Prop info

The airframe certainly has the strength … anecdotally there’s a 150% design factor. The horsepower is the issue…. surprisingly long takeoff runs and frustratingly shallow climb-performance will be evident…. even frighteningly-so if you do this without consideration of Density Altitude….Flying a 170 ...

Re: different engines in 170,s

I once inquired into the idea of converting a B-model to an O-470…. but discovered the engine weighs 140 lbs more than an O-300 ….. which, sitting forward of the firewall…. made for some CG compromises that were untenable. The IO-360 only weighs about 35 lbs more than the O-300…but produces similar ...

Re: CS Prop info

https://media.mcfarlaneaviation.com/documents/cessna170-172-175performancetestdatar1.pdf That’s interesting data….. They operated it 250 over gross wt…. and claim a shortest ground roll with a 3 blade over a 2 blade… something out-of-the-ordinary. Usually 2-blade props outperform 3-blades in takeof...
