Re: 7649 Prop questions

I've got a 7649 prop on my ragwing and can tell you it does not have quite the performance of a seaplane prop. I have flown side by side with a friend who has one and mine is slightly faster and doesn't climb quite as well. Running hard I'm seeing around 110-115mph. Feels great pulled back to a calm...

Re: Call Signs

The tower in Hillsboro, Oregon (home base) started referring to me as Skywagon when telling other people my position so I just took the compliment and now I'm Skywagon 4286V.

Re: 850 x 6 tires

Minimal reduction in airspeed on my '48. As far as handling they feel great. Much better than the roller skate wheels on there before. Landings are much smoother both on grass and pavement. Lots of cushion, much harder to bounce. It's been a really great improvement both to the handling and looks. T...

Re: 1948 170 Engine Conversion

I think a lightweight early 170 with a 180HP engine would be sweet! If you have the means you should try it!

Re: 170 gear upgrade

Excellent responses, thank you! I think I will be on the lookout for a matching set with no drilled hole, preferably a set of lady legs or 180 gear. I'm glad the knock kneed legs have fans but I'm interested in a more upright stiff legged look. Everyone who walks by the airplane likes to comment on ...

Re: 170 gear upgrade

Bruce- since you have put a lot of thought into this subject what would you recommend he do as an upgrade? I am also in the same boat as the OP. My '48 gear go every which way but down, her nickname is bow legged Betty. One leg has a hole, the other has a dimple. I don't have a lot of faith in the i...

Grimes Landing Light Issue! 1948 Ragwing

Hi guys, I have been searching for a while to no avail. Last night when returning home from a sunset flight I decided to use my landing light for visibility in the pattern. It worked great! Upon taxi back to my hangar I flipped the switch that drives the landing light back up, up and then forgot to ...

Re: Non standard rudder return spring system

Thanks for being such a welcoming group!!!! We were able to install the original springs with only a little swearing. We used safety wire to keep guide the springs to the general area and and also to keep them from falling into the belly. Once they were in place it was a matter of holding the pedals...

Re: Non standard rudder return spring system

Thanks gahorn! I got lucky that the previous owner was also a member and have me a ton of documentation to go with the aircraft including that manual that uses member contributions to go through each system, such a brilliant use of community knowledge! I was impressed before I even logged in!

Re: Non standard rudder return spring system

WOW thanks for the warm welcome guys! Hopefully returning the return system back to original isn't too big of an issue! I will try to remember to take pictures as I work with an A&P to get everything buttoned back up! I contacted the A&P who has maintained it for the last 25 years and he had...

Re: Non standard rudder return spring system

Thank you Bruce and ghostflyer! I ordered the springs yesterday after I found them missing and broke. I just wanted to verify that this was a farmer John fix rather than some STCd alternative I was not aware of. Don't worry guys, I will have it returned to stock before I fly it again! Thank you for ...

Non standard rudder return spring system

Hi everyone! New member here, first post. I bought my 170 to learn to fly tailwheel and to have fun building time. I'm in the process of getting checked out now. My instructor was reporting some poor ground handling and so I did some investigating as to why that might be. I landed on the rudder retu...
