I don't think there is a loophole for the Bahamas re:12 inch numbers. The real issue is the U.S. If you are going to cross the ADIZ you have to have 12 inch fuselage numbers... even if they are temporary ones (see FAR 45).

I tell my passengers that bush pilots use them to keep deer off the runways :D I even had a kid studying for his A&P believing me  He asked why there was a small tube inside the big tube. I told him that someone figured out that animals respond to different frequencies, so the small one is ...

It's not so. :D I had the same question and here's what I found.... It's true that most certificated aircraft have to display 12" numbers, but not in all cases. This is one situation where age is on our side. FAR 45.22(b) seems to be the deciding factor..... " A small U.S.-registered aircr...

Russ, No problem... $26.40. It looks similar to the one you found in A/C Spruce (p/n 111-226). I usually buy my own parts, but I didn't buy the solenoid, so I don't know where my mechanic picked it up. My log entry states "... Replaced master solenoid S1579AL....", but the service receipt ...

Whoa... that makes three... you, me, and russ murri. The cosmic powers that be must be conspiring against our electrical systems :) Since my solenoid was replaced last May, I'm thinking my problem is the switch or some other wiring issue. I'm still going to check the solenoid anyway. I'll report bac...

Aha! Electrons for Dummies  just what I needed! BTW, at my mechanic's recommendation, I had the solenoid replaced at my last annual (May) since he said that it appeared I had a very old, if not original one, installed. I'll still check the new one out - just because it's new doesn't mean it ain...

George, Thanks for the tips... I'll check it out the next time at the airport. Admittedly, electrical work is not my strong suit :? , so I can certainly use all the assistance I can get!

I'll post back after I check out the switch.

Piano Key Switches

I think I'm having an intermittent problem with my master switch on my '52. Occasionally when I turn it on I don't have power, but after trying it once or twice I eventually do get power. I suppose that after fifty years the switches could stand replacing. Has anyone ever replaced the switches that ...

I'm an oil filter advocate. My 170 came with the adaptor already installed. Interesting tidbit - my owner's manual for my '52 lists an oil filter as "optional equipment". Hhhmmmm... I would think you'd WANT you oil as clean as possible. I agree, I can't imagine why it wasn't standard equip...

It seems that most of the discussion on this (at least in the "Carb Ice" thread) centers around death rates and I don't think that gives an accurate picture. I think that in order to truly assess which mode is safer you need to include all accidents. While the ratio of accident:death is hi...

Despite all the reports of latch problems, I've never had any problem with my originals. I had one latch where the "clip latch" had one broken side, but still seemd to work (oddly enough). They can be had from Univair for $10 ea (what a bargain  ). I replaced it, had one episode wher...

I agree that we shouldn't have too many forums, but having a place to upload photos would be nice. We had a LOT of photos on the old Yahoo site (which are still accessible), but it would be nice to be able to have everything in one place. It would also be nice to post new photos (projects or other) ...

BTW, if the engine is an O-300-A, it is listed on the TCS for the 170 as it is basically the same thing as the C-145. If the engine is an O-300-D (with accessory case to handle a vacuum pump) then it is listed on STC SA7441SW. I've heard of several 170s with the O-300-D mod, don't know if they were ...

I definitely agree with the previous posts re:engine and corrosion. Sitting idle is the worst thing for anything mechanical. Being in a barn, the equation "((Barn + Airplane = Mouse House) x Time = Corrosion)" springs to mind. Anyway, having bought a '52 170B that had sat idle off and on, ...
