Re: Cowl Hood Assembly Situation
Hi David I had a similar experience with my plane (a 52B with the early cowl style) my experience unfortunately happened in fast cruise and the resultant flapping quickly broke the other side loose. The whole upper cowl was a write off. I made my own top cowl doors and the center piece, my IA approv...

Re: Certainty for General Aviation Pilots Act of 2021
This controversy arose out of a Florida operators’ selling “flight instruction” in Warbirds…. as a Ruse… the reality being that they were selling Rides in Warbirds under the disguise of calling it “flight instruction”….. the problem being that whether or not an instructor were truly qualified to pr...

We used to call it the flying coke machine at the school, pull the power and that's about what it seemed to fly like.IA DPE wrote:With a Hersey Bar Wing.mmcmillan2 wrote:You’ve never flown a Piper Arrow have you?

Re: any updates on wing X approval?
They have the Canadian STC, you might be able to use that as the basis for 337 approval. It probably isn't worth the money for them to get it approved on 170s since their aren't as many of our birds around.

Re: 70509 Beacon Bulb
Well for what it's worth I did manage to adapt a $6 12V 35W halogen garden bulb into the plastic part of the beacon. It's mounted and has so far been working fine for three to four times as long as its $100 Whelen predecessor. If I paid myself minimum wage for the time invested I think a new Whelen ...

Re: 70509 Beacon Bulb
Yep, that's exactly what I ordered the first time. I was very careful not to touch the bulb itself when I installed it, and it blew out on the first flight. For nearly $100 plus shipping I'm darned if I want to buy another one, but I reckon I'll probably have to.

70509 Beacon Bulb
Does anybody out there have any experience sourcing a replacement bulb for a Whelen 70509 beacon? I'm not talking about the bulb assembly that they sell for 1 aviation unit (approximately $100 with shipping) but rather the bulb itself. I recently purchased a replacement for the original one in my be...

Why does paint fall off the belly
I've been shopping for a trainer which has me looking at other planes besides my 170. Here and there I've run into a plane or two where the paint is coming off the belly...... Why would the paint fall off the belly, aggressive cleaning? Usually on old planes and paint jobs it's peeling off the wings...

Re: Spins and other “aerobatics”
Lots of good food for thought. My first "flight lesson" was with a jackass instructor who put me through spins in the C152. I didn't know any better at the time, I thought I was learning when in reality he was just having a lark and trying to make me sick. My 170 has a bit of character and...

Re: Cessna 170 Accident Discussions #1
“ Cessna 170B ZK-BQH had demonstrated some abnormal flight characteristics during its time with the Hawera Aero Club. The aircraft tended to oscillate gently in pitch when in straight and level flight and at times the nose would suddenly pitch down. Several pilots reported difficulty in trimming the...

Re: CG changes with engine conversions
Oh, my bad, I was tired. Not behind the firewall, rather behind the baggage compartment. Servicing is one reason I'd like to move it back to the front of the firewall, and the other is that long heavy battery cable that runs all the way under the floor to the starter solenoid. The original STC locat...

Re: CG changes with engine conversions
I did the DelAir conversion on mine with an O360 and Hartzel constant speed. The O360 is actually a bit lighter than the old C145. However, the Hartzel is heavier than a fixed pitch. So the cumulative effect was the same weight, but the center of weight for the engine and prop combination moves slig...

Re: Seat rollers
For what it's worth I just replaced my rollers with the McFarlane replacement rollers. The original ones were aluminum and didn't look all that bad, but they were getting draggy. The new rollers were make of something else, perhaps Delrin but I don't know. At any rate they made a night and day diffe...
