Re: History of a gear collapse

XP Mods is still in business and is owned by Tom Anderson, who also owns The Landing Gear Works. A call to him would explain the process of re-arcing and shot peening Cessna gear legs. A high percentage of Cessna taildraggers have had gearbox damage by this point. If properly repaired and documented...

Re: Slooooooow 170b

"The FAA relies on A&Ps with IA authorizations to conduct thorough airworthiness inspections on GA aircraft annually. If nonconformity is discovered during an annual, the IA is the person with the ability and authority to identify, verify, and correct it." This is the problem with gene...

Re: C170B Fuel Selector Valve

It is amazing how sometimes walking away and clearing your mind can make all the difference. I remember them telling us that in A&P school. Sometimes you just have to cross your toes and hold your tongue just right....

Re: Rudder Counterweight

I have not balanced many 170 rudders, although I will be doing 2 soon. However, I have balanced many Cessna rudders ranging from 150s through 208s. Like I said, I could very well be wrong. 10 oz. at the balance weight would be approximately 8 in. lbs. That would mean it is +35. Seems like a lot.

Re: Rudder Counterweight

I could be wrong, but I don't remember ever having to add that much weight to a rudder that wasn't heavily modified. Is this rudder stripped or painted? Are you certain the math is correct?

Re: Cracked Vertical Stab Bracket

I can think of several ways that would get the job done. A drill jig would be a good option. If a guy has access to a milling machine, mounting it up and mapping the holes along the x and y axis relative to the base would be a very accurate method.

I would not install an engine control cable with a 360 degree loop in it. Measure and order the correct length.

Re: Door latch trouble - pull bar disconnected

There are two pins at play here. The one that Bruce mentioned is the one that the catch pivots on. The other, smaller one is where the bar actuates the catch. Both were made from NAS41 piano hinge pin, 3/32 and 1/8, the idea being that you grab a chunk of hinge pin and cut the length you need. The l...

Re: Cracked Vertical Stab Bracket

Looks like a crack that has been fretting to me. You will more than likely need to remove the vertical stablilizer to buck that lower rivet. I do not like where that rivet is placed in the radius with a spotface. When I reskinned my vertical I considered using something like a Hilok there, but wound...

Okay, apply some anti-friction compound that does not attract dust. Not sure why I would install the McFarlane rolllers when the Cessna original rollers are still available at Textron.

Re: C170B Pilot's seat VERY hard to slide fore-aft

It's never a bad time to remove your seats and carefully inspect them and the rails. Of course, this should be done annually in compliance with AD2011-10-09, but seat frames and rails can get bent, rollers can get worn and stuck, etc...The problem can usually be identified by carefully watching the ...

Have you considered installing ABI aluminum wheels and double puck brakes? Pretty reasonable price(compared to Parker)and comes with STC.
