Re: Power flow exhaust on 170B-360 Lycombing

Been flying a C-170B-O-360 Lycoming for the last 36 years. mostly in Alaska. One thing that you can do to shorten your take off run is to droop the ailerons slightly. You will have a trade off of a slower cruise speed. Start by shortening the rod to the bell crank by 1/2 turn, then fly the plane and...

Re: C170 door hinges availability

Maybe has something to do with why the door stop on the 172s' and 175s' is shorter because of less clearance between the top of the door and the wing bottom.

Re: Charging system question

I had a similar problem some years back. Everything looked ok, no broken wires that I could see, gentle tugs showed everything seemed to be secure. But a A&P friend stopped by to see what I was doing and started grabbing wires and giving them fairly good yanks and one came right out of the termi...

Re: Frayed rudder cable

Don't forget that the rudder cables cross in the aft tail cone, the cable that comes out the right side to the rudder passes under the floor on the left side and vice versa. The project plane that I worked on last summer and fall had the rudder cables running parallel all the way to the rudder when ...

Re: Frayed rudder cable

If they are bolted on use a 1/4 drive socket on a long extension from the other side. If rivets drill them out and either bolt back on or drive new rivets with a long custom bucking bar from the other side. Beats taking the whole tail off unless there are other needs to address. Fasten the new cable...

Re: Frayed rudder cable

As the old saying goes " There is more than one way to skin a skunk " The fairleads are held in by small 'C' clips which prevent them from slipping out of the aluminum brackets which are either riveted to the tail cone skin or fastened with screws or bolts if they have been removed sometim...

Re: 170A or 170B

IMO going from a stock engine 'A' to a stock engine 'B' will not gain much. If the flying you do, and places you go, are not pushing the limits of your plane, you are most likely good as is. That said, I use the 180 hp engine because I do go places and do things that a stock engine 170 will not quit...

Gives you a good feeling to KNOW how things work and that you have them working as they should in that area. Right!

Re: Tailwheel Springs

Back in the 1970's a number of 170's around Fairbanks had two main leaf springs installed. The problem that I saw was that there was not enough ( spring ) in the spring and the tail cone would break just forward of the attach bracket. Of course these were planes working off river gravel airstrips. S...

Re: Tailwheel cables slack

The parts book shows only one clamp on each cable. I replaced a cable on mine that was frayed and it has two clamps on each cable. If yours only has one clamp each. I would suggest you put two clamps on each cable.. Be a lot less chance of it sliding then. Kind of a mickey mouse way for Cessna to do...

Re: Hanger Math

What I did for pulling a plane into the hangar up a slope that gets a bit slippery when it is icy. Was to mount a electric winch to the back wall of the hangar. That with a line with loops about 10-12 feet apart and a hook on the end makes the effort a mater of pushing a button.

Re: To primer or leave bare aluminum, that is the question

Just a thought. Since you don't really care about pretty. Use rattle cans of Zinc Chromate. Will look terrible at first but will darken with age and can be touched up as needed over the years. Have used it on aluminum boat parts used in salt water and it is good at preventing corrosion. Say it is OD...

Re: Flap Cable Length/Installation

Don't have the parts book in front of me. There are two types of flap cables one is a one piece from a turn buckle under the floor behind the fuel selector to the bell crank in the wing. the other is a two piece cable with a second turn buckle in the door post. One style used before ser # xxxxxxxx a...

Re: Looking for this 170

Looks like my airframe books ( #2 ) only go back to Aug 1969 and all are west coast ( Port Townsend ) or Alaska owners. Charlie
