Re: Looking for this 170

Been to the big city for a few days, ( Anchorage ) Give me a chance and I'll look through the records. The paint does not quite match the picture, but the cowling may have been repainted at some point. The plane is now in the home stretch of a complete new paint scheme. Charlie

Re: N2814C bent

Don't think it is for sale at this point. Just another 170B mangled a couple days ago two people injured. But there is a lesson to be learned here if you can learn from the mistakes of others. At this time there may be other factors involved with the accident that have not been reported so far.

N2814C bent

Would have thought someone more computer literate would have been on here before now. But do a search for this plane and you can get the story. N2814C wrecked at Puntilla lake near Rainy pass, Alaska Range.

Re: How much ice can a 170 pack?

Two or three inches of smooth ice on top of the cabin only is a non event. Freezing rain shower can build up ice real thick and fast. Hit some in Canada in the spring of '78'. Sounded like hail on a car top, saw the ice form on the engine cowling about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick in a few seconds, then it...

Re: Rear seat cushion

Been reading some stuff about fire proofing chemicals in beds and the off gassing that can cause some bad effects on the body. Probably should try to avoid chemical fire proofing as much as possible and try to use materials that are fire resistant without the chemical additives.

Re: Thinking about a trip

I have said part of this before and some people can't understand. but maybe some of the newer people to flying in mountains will become cautious enough to live another day. George is correct in the terminolgy. However there can be exceptions. Here is a example of what can happed in mountains. You Al...

Re: 180HP Rocker cover/cowling interference

On my '55' I made new cowl doors because the original ones were a bit worn. I very carefully located the two new Hartwell latches where the old ones were located and had the same problem of scratching the rocker cover as you have. I ground off the corner of the latch tip for clearence. I also instal...

Re: The 180 hp mod and its progress

If you have a expert aluminum welder in the area the tank can be rewelded or a patch welded in if it is a large area of cracks. Might be faster and or cheaper than shipping from the states.

Re: 1956 172 panel overlay..

If any of you have a extra B panel overlay, I am assembling a 53 that could use one. Bought the plane with some assembly required. Turns out it needed a lot of reassembly due to incorrect assembly by the previous owner. Send a PM if you have one you want to part with.

Re: Remove Before Flight flags

Many years ago, ( over 30 ) I took off with a lycoming engine with the fuel selector in the off position. It was a learning experience. And I know another person who did the same in a lycoming powered C-175. In both cases taxi was short and about 50 feet altitude was reached before the engine quit. ...

Re: McCauley breaks?

FYI I learned quite a few years ago that I could eliminate all corrosion of the aluminum housing of the 10 inch jet in my commercial fishing boat that uses all stainless hardware and a stainless shaft and impellor by painting the aluminum parts with the green zinc cromate. It also stopped all marine...

Re: Fuel smell

Two more possibles that I have seen are: water freezing in the overhead vent lines and splitting the tubing, more likely in snow country. and the fuel tank rubbing on the lip of the main wing spar causing a hairline crack which would seep when the tank was full.

Re: Lycoming Shut down?

Been pulling the mixture at around 1200 rmp for 30+ years and no ill effects. Like to see the propeller bounce back and forth against compression on shut down and not suddenly stop, which to me indicates the engine is still too hot. The reduced power of landing and taxi to parking usually is enough ...

Re: She flew faster!

I did some expermenting with the aileron position 25+ years ago. The object was to get off the ground in a shorter distance. The bottom line is that drooping the ailerons allows a shorter ground run on take off, but it slows cruise speed, Raising the ailerons increases cruise speed but also increase...

Re: Compass Correction Card

Well, seems like at a FAA saftey meeting some years back the FAA rep said the compass rose needed to be FAA certified to be legal. And he named the locations that had certified compass roses at that time. Don't think it is a high priorty item for FAA people. Some of the things I learned back then ha...
