My 170 will be parked for 6 months. Anything I should do?

My 170 will be parked in Phoenix, Arizona for about 6 month over the summer while we travel. It currently has Philips 20w-50 Oil + Camguard in it, with 20 hours on the oil (has an oil filter) Would it be ok to just leave it for 6 mo with that, or should I change to W100 + Camguard while it is not be...

Re: torpedo LED conversion

BrianW, i have a pdf copy of the thread with the missing photos. If you pm your email address to me I can send you a copy. I think that the missing photos are the same ones as in the article Gary identified, but are larger and in color. It’s interesting that many of the photos in the thread apparen...

torpedo LED conversion

Anyone have photos on how to swap LED lights into the overhead torpedo lights? I found some old threads on here, but the photos are gone.

Thanks in advance!

Higher oil temps with Phillips XC20W50 ?

I've switched to using XC20W50 because I fly over 150 hours/year, and the temps where I fly vary a lot. My last trip from Michigan to Arizona, I had temps in the low 30s up to 90s. One downside I've noticed, it it seems to have higher oil temps than when running 100W. The temp gauge was almost in th...

Short field/Flaps/172A differences

I was reading the 170B POH, and the 1956 172 POH this morning and noticed that the 172 POH recommends no flaps for takeoff with obstacle clearance, and the 170 POH says to use 20. Strange since these planes should be very similar in performance, same engine, prop, wing. Any idea what caused Cessna t...

Re: Best front headset jack location for a 1955?

thanks.. where does your PTT switch wire in? Do you have a separate jack for the yoke switch or is it hard-wired to the audio panel? I'm thinking I'll just wire up a 3rd jack under the panel to plug in the pilot PTT switch instead of some portable PTT in the mic jack.

Best front headset jack location for a 1955?

My 170B always had a portable intercom, and is an upgrade to a trig 96A radio/intercom. Looking for the preferred location to put the front headset jacks. I've noticed on the piano key models, they are usually in the upper right/left of the panel. Where do people usually put them for the 1955 panel ?

Re: My rudder has a lot more travel to the left

I suspect rudder travel beyond 16 degrees may be less effective at providing yaw forces on the plane than setting it at 16,

Re: My rudder has a lot more travel to the left

Went out and did some measuring of the rudder travel using a notepad, ruler and ipad app. Then I found the template Bruce made on here, so will go measure again with that as well. Travel seems to be well beyond 16 degrees, and there are no washers under the stops, so they are all the way in. Whats t...

Re: My rudder has a lot more travel to the left

Thanks.. What manual did those drawings come out of? I'd like to get a copy of that manual.

To measure the rudder travel, is there a recommended tool, or will have I have to build something to accurately measure it? Will a prop protractor used on top of the vertical stabilizer do the job?

My rudder has a lot more travel to the left

While doing some work on the tailwheel springs today, we noticed that the has a lot more travel to the left stop than the right. I assume this isn't normal, if anything I'd expect a bit more right rudder travel. The stop on the right is screwed all the way in, so there isn't any more adjustment befo...

Installing AF 1441003-1 axels

Have a bit of a silly problem trying to install these airforms steel axels.. The install document I have calls for a MS24665-351 cotter pin on the axel nut. I'm finding that to be way too short and additionally the pin hole on the axels seem really small to where you would have to use a very small d...

Re: Steel axel bolts

Yes, I was thinking the length of the current bolts wouldn't be relevant, because the crosswind gear is completely different than the ABI kit going on. CROSSWIND GEAR! You know I did the same conversion, Crosswind for straight axle about 2-1/2 years ago. I just can't remember what is different but ...

Re: Steel axel bolts

Yes, I was thinking the length of the current bolts wouldn't be relevant, because the crosswind gear is completely different than the ABI kit going on. Instead of ordering expensive NAS bolts, and then figuring out they are the wrong length, I like the suggestion of just using AN bolts to get things...

Steel axel bolts

Looking for help with what bolts/nuts/washers I should order to bolt the AF1441003-1 axels to the 170B lady leg gear. From the parts catalog, it looks like NAS146-42 and NAS 145-41. and a NAS 143-5C washer. Where can I actually order this stuff? Looking to bolt up the ABI 199-62 wheels/brake kit. I ...
