Re: Door latch trouble - pull bar disconnected

55641653-D65C-4664-9D1F-8E62AB49A0ED.jpeg Thanks to everyone’s help, especially Bruce with his detailed latch removal procedure, I think I’m back in business. It was tight getting that latch out and thankfully someone had done it before me so no drilling rivets. They had replaced the broken mousetr...

Door latch trouble - pull bar disconnected

Has anybody had a door latch problem where the tiny pin disappears from the catch? Started to get out of the plane yesterday only to discover the left door wouldn't open by either handle. I think my springs are ok since the handles return to their correct positions. Used a small flathead screwdriver...

Re: Aft fuselage inspection panel

Resurrecting an older post in hopes that someone has successfully added an inspection hole in the tailcone. Just finished up a 7 month annual (first annual for me) on N4477B which included new rudder and tailwheel cables. A couple of flights later, during a preflight, I notice that I missed one of t...

Re: What Type of Prop?

When I first got my 55 170B I was having trouble making the minimum static RPM. The prop that was on the plane was a DM7653 that had been repitched to a 55. While on the phone with McCauley, the tech told me I should be leaning for full power while doing the static run up (which I hadn't been doing)...

Primer line fitting at manifold

I recently replaced my primer lines with new 1/8” copper. I had trouble soldering the fitting on the end that goes in the manifold. I used “silver solder” which actually is 95% tin. Several attempts finally seemed to stick. But now after 4 flights the line has separated from the fitting. Is there a ...

Re: Fuel Tank Filler

I'm trying to remedy the same problem here. One of my caps is 90 degrees off when tight. Not only does it drive me crazy to look at it, I have a friend (with similar misaligned cap) who nearly missed the fact that the line crew didn't tighten his cap after refueling. They oriented it straight with t...

Re: 0300A - inspecting lifters?

Apparently, I misunderstood or was told incorrectly about the cam being in the oil. I appreciate all the good photos and explanation. I do have a endoscope that can serve as a borescope, so I will try poking around when we drain the oil. According to that Service Information Directive, the inspectio...

Re: 0300A - inspecting lifters?

I appreciate the detailed instructions and cautions Bruce. This sounds a little beyond my shade tree mechanic experience. I’m tending to agree with Jim that maybe I not go to that much trouble until metal starts showing up in the oil analysis. The motor only has about 600 hrs since MO, but it’s the ...

0300A - inspecting lifters?

I'm a new 170B owner (1955 with 0300A). It sat for 15 years in Missouri before I bought it this past summer. I'm slowly going through everything I can before it gets a thorough annual in a few weeks. The topic at hand is trying to inspect the lifters for corrosion. A friend bought a 182 that had sim...

Steve, that confirms it’s the 30-63a kit. Thank you.

I will try using Google to search the forum. Thanks again to both of you for the help. I should have asked a week ago!

Re: Cleveland brake conversions numbers

Thank you Bruce! After pouring over everything you posted, I believe you are right. I think the brake assembly I have is the 30-63a. That gets me everything I need! So, my follow up question is: how did you come up with those threads so quickly? I’ve spent considerable time over several days on this...

Cleveland brake conversions numbers

I have a 1955 170B with the Cleveland brake conversion and I’m wanting to replace the pads and the o rings in the pistons. However, I don’t have the early logs that show that kit being installed and the only numbers I can find are on the calipers. Aircraft Spruce can’t cross reference the caliper nu...

Re: Approved Seat rail stops

Thanks to each of you for the replies and links to research. Very helpful. Yes, Doug, I believe you nailed what I was looking for. I am under the impression that those clips are required to be airworthy, but I wasn’t finding the 170 listed on the approved airplane lists. At any rate, I’ve ordered th...
