Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

About 3 miles down the road there is what was once a really nice older, two-story farmhouse which has been abandoned on about 200 acres. It used to be in pretty good structural shape, …being made of stone…. but it has deteriorating windows and hasn’t been occupied in almost half a century now. It’s...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

I was finally able to get everything inside! Now I will really be able to roll my sleeves up and make some progress. Thinking the fastest way to get this project done is to start buying scratch off tickets ...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

Still monitoring all transmissions very closely. Traveling a lot for work = less time to work on plane but more money (soon) to buy parts. Liberated the door skin from the door frame and am desperately trying to find .032 locally to avoid the $120 shipping, although at this point I may just pull the...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

I do like the idea of being able to see the rivet and know what a good smooshed tail looks like. Likely if it looks good no one will ever know the difference. I am waiting for some paycheck money to buy a bunch of aluminum. That is my hang up for the wing. Any of you guys ever had to reskin a door? ...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

The one on ebay does it have the same part number . It might “look” the same BUT ,does it have the same thickness and aluminium type . Many people assume 2024 T3 is used every where But surprising it does not . One would question the condition of the ebay part and it’s aluminium condition under the...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

Good morning! I was working on the wing last night because I got home from the airport too late to buy running pneumatic tools outside (so I run them inside). I popped the last fuel tank out and found the fuel tank well skins all need to be replaced. I spent the better half of an hour last night try...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

Good morning, I had been scratching my head about this for a few days. I moved the 170A fuselage back in the garage and there was a cardboard box in the way. My friend that helped me unload had to get back to his wife and we were just dumping stuff that I would organize later. I also have parts from...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

Now that is a JIG A Cessna-built jig, now owned by Mountain Airframe in Mena, Arkansas. You might want to look them up and talk to Del Lehmann and/or Brett Ham. They have a lot experience with this level of repair to Cessna 170’s. I just got off the phone with Del. He said if both airframes are tru...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

Looking forward to some more pictures of the progress. If you have the original cabin top skin you might want to fasten that in place before you take too much apart. To remove the aft bulkhead you will have to remove the door sills, at which point you will want to cross brace across the door openin...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

I appreciate all the information. I was always under the impression "the data plate was the aircraft. My current plan of action is to maintain the aft A pillar where the data plate is riveted, so luckily I will not have to cross in to any such territory. I am no sheet metal guru, but I have don...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

If all the parts from the 170A fuselage section were the same as the 170, I don't see any legal ramifications to installing serviceable parts and reattaching the data plate. Since we know they are not, you are left with using what parts you can to repair your fuselage. "Transplanting a gearbox...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

From the legality standpoint… it would be better to transplant the 170A-model gearbox to the 170… rather than switch the 170 dataplate to the 170A fuselage. There was a couple hours yesterday where I was considering the latter. I think with the above information about interchangeability my only rec...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

I am rather surprised to see the commonality of part numbers between the 1948 C-170 and the C-170A. I would have thought, since the two models have completely different struts, that the lower attach points would not have common part numbers. But, in fact, they do. Based just on looking at the part ...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

I can't say this is what I wanted to hear but it probably is what I needed to hear. The 170A fuselage section I have was obtained because of the gearbox. This picture is the 170 gearbox that I was going to replace. Looking at the A pillar rivets I decided it might be a lot easier to use that section...
