Sticky Valves

I had a friend who had a valve stick 15 years ago. The airport where he landed had a mechanic who helped him do the rope. The mechanic recomended Mix-I-Go. We've been using it ever since. Neither has had a valve stick yet. My mechanic cannot believe how clean my plugs stay either. Great stuff. http:...

Venturis

OK folks, I have found out that 4” venturis are not measured as 4” in any dimension. They are designed to create 4” of vacuum at 100 MPH. So if you have 52, 4” vinturis on your airplane all connected together, all you will get from them is 4” of vacuum at 100 MPG. The more venturis you hav...

Oh, that's great! I am glad you enjoyed the fly-in. If you are in town again, please get in touch with us. You can ask anyone on the field. They'll know how to contact us. We are starting the ball on this years Piper Cub fly-in. There are a lot of hangars going in. The west ramp is almost full now. ...

Good Mechanic

I talked this article over with my mechanic. He has a passion for the 170 and knows a lot about them. He is also the kind of guy who will work with you on your project. He usually will be able to tell how much it will cost and doesn’t come up with surprises half way into the job. His rate is way l...

Old Birds With Wrinkles

I am glad you guys wrote about this. I have always wondered about these ripples. I have wrinkles behind the right gear leg. I imagine it came from when it was ground looped in 1976. I was saving that for a retirement project. At each annual, I measure from the tail wheel bolt to a common location on...

Too much work. I'd rather polish my airplane.

BINGO!

On a decent of 500 FPM at red line. I just wanted to see if I could over do it with the vacuum. I don't ever do that as a practice. I do know that my airspeed indicator will go well above VNE. When I was taking my check ride and he did that unusual attitude recovery thing, that I don't like, I actua...

BINGO!

Alright folks. Leaks in the casing and around any of the seams of the instrument will cause it to go crazy. After two test flights and many steep turns my AH works perfectly. It is more responsative than the old one. Rock solid. I have a line running directly to it from the right venturi, with a tee...

Vacuum System

OK, Here’s today’s results. I used Larry’s vacuum pump and the AH on the bench. I connected the mercury monometer where you connect the vacuum gauge. I connected the rotometer between the AH and filter. Turn on the switch. We saw that the vacuum gauge, on Larry’s pump, is off by almost 1 who...

Cbogle, I replaced the two, on each side, ½” strut bolts on mine. I had to ream the left lower hole out because it was egg shaped. So I used an oversize bolt in that one. I believe I torqued them to 440 in. lb. But I remember that I called Cessna and they told me exactly how to do the repair and ...

I would have to put a lot more into this airplane to make it suitable for IFR. I just use the horizon for my BFRs. I really don't have any other uses for it. I will use the turn coordinator about once every couple years too. The DG is basically something to fill the hole. That’s about it. I tried ...

Vacuum System

Both horizons were new. The first one’s moving display shook like something was out of balance. Even on the bench. So that wasn’t vibration from the engine. That was why I sent it back. Perhaps the air leaks were blowing on it inside. The reason I am going ahead and fixing it myself is I will ha...

OK Folks, here’s what I have got. I isolated my AH from the rest of the system, since it performs the worst. I attached a rotometer to the port where the filter goes. I applied 4 ½” of vacuum and was only getting .8 SCFM if flow through it. So I increased the vacuum to 5.5 and still only got .8...
