Red Fluid

While cleaning the belly of my '48 170 I noticed a little red fluid around the drain holes of the panel under the main cabin area and the next one back. It wasn't dripping and was easily wiped off. Looks like automatic transmission fluid--could it be brake fluid? My level is ok and no obvious leaks....

The door locks on my plane both work--the locking lever just rotates down into a slot in the door frame. Of course I'm not sure how hard it would be to pick the locks. I know airplane locks are notoriously bad. I can use the key to the locks on the camper shell on my pickup for the ignition key.

Dave--my 170 is the first plane I've flown with a carb temperature gauge. In 3 years of ownership I've had a number of times with carb ice, and every time the temperature was in the yellow. So anytime the temp is in or near the yellow I'm even more vigilant. As a side note, from my limited experienc...

I'm not sure of "large" diameter mufflers, but I recently sent a copy of a 337 I had approved in September to install 172 mufflers in my '48 to the association.

Its pretty obvious the weather has been lousy lately--way too much time on your hands--you can see what happens when these inventive minds get too much fertilizer.

'48 Ragwing fuel cap gaskets

Has anyone out there found a supplier for these? I've tried making them (probably out of less than satisfactory materials), but I still don't seal tight. I'm getting tired of cleaning fuel stains off the top of the wing, especially after a slip.

I have a carburetor temperature guage, which has been pretty reliable at letting me know when carb ice is likely. I had never flown with one before, but it has been pretty much on the mark so I think I'll keep it. Like George said, the rpm drop has always been my best indicator.

Jumping out of a plane

I've read a few news stories about the guy in Spring, Texas who went up with a flight instructor in a Cessna 152 to 9000ft, then jumped out(suicide). The news story said the flight instructor just noticed a bump and looked over and saw the guys feet as he exited the airplane. This doesn't make any s...

I'm impressed--my wife hates to fly although she does like old cars and motorcycles. I've had one old car, one old boat, and two 4-wheel drives. When we married my wife had two motorcycles and a pickup. The only plane I've owned is my 170.

I believe the distinction between the two is the AIG out of Bethany, OK and USAIG (I was with them through USAA). I left USAIG because they kept raising my premium as I gained experience and hours (both in my 170 and flying part 135).

carburetor leak

I was out messing with the plane yesterday and noticed some fuel stains on the lower cowl. I checked everything I could see without removing the lower cowl and found a drip of fuel coming off the back of the carburetor, once every two or three seconds. I turned off the fuel in the cabin and the drip...

I installed a "Safe Heat" pad that adheres on the bottom of the oil sump. Plug it in and wait a while--45 minutes when 25 degrees F. or so. I have a carburetor temperature gage and it will register an increase in temperature fairly soon after plugging in. I'm not sure if the cylinders get ...

I've noticed the gap there before and used RTV to seal it. Of course, you have to reseal every time the baffles comes off. Your way sounds better.
