Re: The final chapter of N9793A. What I learned after rebuilding and watching it get totaled!
That’s quite a story. I used to work for the FAA and investigated aviation accidents including 2 ground loops in Cessna 170Bs. In one case the CFI/PIC had 13000 hours instruction given in tailwheel. He could not explain what happened except it was sudden. No gusts, no mechanical problems, it just ha...

Re: My flying journey
As we know, ADs are based on hazards that can adversely affect safety of flight and usually originate from incidents or accidents where a specific problem is identified. Corrective action is then determined followed by a legal process (proposals, public comments) the result of which is mandatory act...

Re: My flying journey
I think I made a comment earlier on your posts but I have to say again I really appreciate your stories and YouTubes. The thought processes and having an open mind is inspiring for people like us in our 70s whose choices may sometimes be narrowing. In your case they seem to expand! Hope you stay saf...

Re: Moisture Mitigation Measures
By coincidence, I was with a student in a 49 year old 172 yesterday and when I opened the right door, at least a gallon of water came out of the lower edge. Apparently, when closed, the door would hold the liquid. Turns out the well intentioned desk assistant at the flight school who fuels airplanes...

Re: Which Mag Fires Which Cylinder?
I’m really glad to hear Steve’s answer and I fully support owners being involved hands on. On line messaging can be vague at times and I sometimes worry about advice being misunderstood in the blind, so to speak. Having said that, this is the best source of information for Cessna 170s and I am happy...

Re: Which Mag Fires Which Cylinder?
One more piece of advice after reading your posts. You don’t tell us your experience in airplane maintenance other than as an owner, and whether or not you are getting assistance from qualified technicians. Maybe you have these qualifications, but just seek info on an older model. In any case, A&...

Re: Instrument panel and subpanel modification
No matter how you cut it, if an IA performs an annual inspection per Part 43 (completed or not), a maintenance record is required. If discrepancies are noted, that fact is recorded in some manner and becomes part of the airplane’s maintenance history. The guidance allows some leeway as to how this i...

Re: Instrument panel and subpanel modification
The owner is very fortunate his flap cable broke while safely on the ground. Given your description of the primary flight controls, he may have had a serious problem if that occurred during a low level landing approach. Your description of this airplane raises red flags. My advice is to carefully do...

Re: Ist das legal?
Ok, looked closer and saw N# on tail. I think its legal because it clearly displays a registration number. The larger letters do not obscure or alter what is required. I’m sure there are some who might disagree.

Re: Ist das legal?
45.25 requires that aircraft registration numbers be “displayed” and goes on to describe how and where to do it. It does not prohibit displaying anything else including possible registration from another country. To deliberately display conflicting numbers would be considered improper but probably n...

Re: Project 170 Value??
Looking at Barnstormers, there are 3 listings that may be of interest to you: A flyable Cessna 170 (fabric wing) $55k, A “project” Cessna 170 with metalized wings (“price slashed”) $20k, and a damaged Cessna 170 to be “ parted out”. If I were trying to determine how much this airplane is worth, I wo...

Re: Upgrading avionics for instrument rating training in C172
I’m all for the new digital instrumentation and navigators and have equipped my plane with them. That said, I would not take anything for having earned my instrument rating in my 170 with an old school analog raw data instrument panel, ADF, and nav-com radio with glide slope. You have to have a cle...

Re: Dents forming in the wing from the sun
I had a 1950 Cessna 170 A for about 15 years. The wing was painted bright red and operated in the hot California Central Valley. Never experienced skin deformity. I hangared it in Fresno, but it would spend time parked in direct sunlight while traveling. Incidentally, does your upper skin display an...
