Re: Building Tailwheel Time Before Ownership

Depending on what is in your area, it isn't always easy. I put a lot of miles driving here and there to get dual instruction in taildraggers where I could find it. I few hours in a Cessna 140, a few in a Luscombe, a few in a J3, a few in a Champ, a few in a Stearman, a few in a Pitts S-2A, and a few...

Re: Fuel flow

The 48 does have a different (simpler) valve design than Aryana shows.

Left and right tanks are interconnected when the valve is either on "Both" or "Off".
But there should not be any interconnection when the valve is either on "Left" or "Right".

Well, it will seem a lot closer in your 170 than it would in your cub

Bruce Fenstermacher wrote: The shielding on your magneto wires should be terminated (grounded) at both ends to keep cables from emitting radio frequency noise.
This may be meant to apply to the high voltage leads between the mag and the spark plugs, rather than the P-leads.

Re: C 170B climb fuel burn chart ??

My recollection is that my fuel flow gage reads about 11 to 11.5 gph at full throttle climb at low altitude. Of course, I don't really spend much time looking at the fuel flow gage during climb......... But I'll look again next time out and see how bad my memory is........ -10C temperature today. F...

Re: Installing Rudder return spring

What about rudder return spring that becomes detached repeatly? If the spring still has tension on it when the rudder hits the stop, it is not likely to be able to detach. When I first bought my 170, I had a spring come off twice. I found that the rudder cable lengths were not adjusted correctly, a...

Re: Micro VGs

Well, I'm another guy who bought VG's and installed them on my Ragwing 170. So, since I paid for them I guess I have to like them. The day I installed them, my mechanic (who also has a Ragwing 170) and I measured stall speed before and after, and also roll rate at 60 mph indicated, before and after....

Re: More Winter baffle questions...

Did you cover the half of the intake that is closest to the valve covers, or the half closest to the center of the engine? If you covered the half closest to the valve covers, that would explain your high cylinder head temperature. Always start covering area near the engine centerline. Probably best...

.........But this is mostly a Lycoming problem since their cam is on top. Continental cams are below the crank and are the last thing to break dry...... Next time you have a cylinder off, peek into the crankcase. You will find that in a C-170, the camshaft in an O-300 is not completely immersed in ...

Re: 170 Landing Gear Attach Block

The inner and outer gear attach blocks of my '48 were also coated with what appears to be chromate primer. There are no logbook entries indicating removal or replacement in the first 56 years, but of course you never know............ The primer did not protect the outer blocks from severe intergranu...
