Re: Pattern procedures

I tend to use more flap when the crosswind is blowing to help slow up the plane quicker once on the ground (along with a lot of brakes). Full flap and a little steeper approach, put it on the mains and hit the brakes. You're down and stopped before the wind can push you around. Home field is 2400x4...

Re: Pattern procedures

Then I tried 1500 RPM with carb heat and one notch of flaps, second notch on base and third notch on final when I know I have the field. This is the closest to what I use. When I transitioned to jets, I asked a similar question. The veteran told me "whatever gets the job done." Since then...

Re: Loss of Oil pressure

Are you saying that you are certain that you have at least 30 psi when you're cranking? I would double check that your gauge is ok before you start tearing into the engine. I would verify your indication system by connecting a known good line and gauge directly to the fitting on the case. While man...

Re: To flap or not to flap

I have heard numerous times, usually from people who have little to no experience in 170/170A airplanes, that the flaps are next to useless. I could not disagree more! Granted not as effective as the B model flaps, they can mean the difference between climbing above a ridge or sinking into it, espec...

Re: Gill G25S Rant

Sears has a $22 float charger which is inexpensive and contains the software to keep a float charge as well as "de-sulfate" a battery. The last few times I've been to Sears for anything, I have been thoroughly put off by their lack of customer service in several stores in several differen...

Re: Built-in Intercom

Since the radio is transmitting the carrier, might be an issue with the mic jack/wiring. Is there one for the copilot side? If so, what happens if that one is pushed and broadcast attempted? Don't overlook grounding wires and shielding. Many times those shields come in contact with something they sh...

Re: Built-in Intercom

What radio and intercom do you have? Does it normally have a "transmit" indication when you hold the PTT down? If so, is it doing it now? Is your comm transmitting anything (as in carrier only, no voice)? I have a GNC250XL and had a SPA400 integrated with it. Sigtronics had this helpful di...

But that'll wear the engine out faster, so those running in the green will be able to keep flying longer while the red one is down for overhaul!

Re: Yellow Arc on the Tach

Per the original Cessna design print, there is not supposed to be a yellow arc on the tach. Some probably assume (incorrectly) that because the Owner's Manual has a maximum recommended cruise RPM, and that the TCDS lists maximum RPM as 2700, therefore anything in between "must" be cautiona...

Re: Which new cylinders are the best? ECI,Superior,Continent

I'm interested to hear what sort of performance the earlier posters to this thread have had with their various cylinders since this thread was last posted to over 6 years ago. I'm facing the decision to overhaul and am debating which way to go (OEM, ECI, etc). From what I've read here, it appears th...

If they did an "annual," did they check and/or adjust mag timing? If adjusted, did they adjust the correct direction and degrees? One of my first lessons out of A&P school and working in a GA shop was just because someone was certificated, doesn't mean they knew squat about correctly w...

Re: Jasco alternator upgrade

Steve, I do not see why you would have to do away with the "piano switches." Power comes from the alternator/generator and first comes to the hot side of the fuses/circuit breakers. Those fuses/CB's are rated to protect the wiring, and also the switches and equipment (but officially, they'...
