Re: '52 & Older 170 8-hole Instrument Panel
Shock mount p/n 0412484 has five 3 1/2" holes and three 2 5/8" holes in the configuration illustrated in LBPilot82's photo. There is probably enough "meat" on the panel that one could size the holes up to 3.5" all around.

Re: Ever Google your N#?
Is all of that on the aircraft's equipment list?? Probably would've sold quicker!bigrenna wrote:I was doing a little bit of missing my 170 tonight and googled the N#.... Damnedest stuff comes up.
Lets see what your search comes up with!?!?!?

Re: Thinking about a trip
OK folks....let's not confuse the issues with incorrect terms. The LEE side is the side OPPOSITE of the wind direction. If there is a north/south ridgeline, and the wind is FROM the west....the LEE side is on the EAST side of the ridge. This is where the wind comes OVER the top of the ridge and the...

Thanks George...I was visualizing it correctly, but typed it incorrectly.gahorn wrote:The lee side is where I've always found downdrafts and turbulence.

Re: Thinking about a trip
What about the Rockies? That's what I'm worried about. I have no mountain experience except for the Blue Ridge at 500 AGL. XM Weather is a good idea for a trip like this. I plan to pull the back seat out for the trip to fit the folding bicycles and camping gear. Are there any books worth reading in...

Re: Gear up landing in a fixed gear aircraft
The pilot seemed fairly young. Has a mishap flying, quits flying. Will he quit driving when he gets into a car accident? Then quit walking when he gets hit in a crosswalk?? Suck it up and fly on! We all have our setbacks, to some degree or another!

Re: iPad Mini
A great example of where ForeFlight FAILS MISERABLY: Bring up any weather overlay on the screen. You have no indication in the software if the data loaded, is loading or failed to load. Worse yet, they present data as 'no news is good news'. If the airport you are flying to is Gusting winds to 90mp...

Re: iPad Mini
Just found this blog post on Foreflight's site regarding the iPad mini. Worth reading if you're drafting up your Santa wish-list!

Re: iPad Mini
And I mention the 560 because of the XM weather. I met with the Foreflight team at the NBAA convention in Orlando last week and came away with new insight for their product and iPads. For those who wish to NOT buy the 3G/4G version (cellular) of the iPad (or iPad mini), there is a fairly new produc...

Re: Windshield installation questions
Sounds like yours went pretty much just like mine. I only had help installing the screws, so I took a little longer. I am very happy with the results, though. Would rather not have to do it again, but if I do, it will be with less anxiety going into the project.

Thanks, George! Vodka...for cleaning, of course! OK, maybe some post-mtx relaxation, too...gahorn wrote:Very nice post (and work product), Josh!
Is that Vodka? or Gin in that glass?
(Used for cleaning purposes on the switch panel, I presume?)

Re: Switches
A simple fuse replacement on my airplane evolved into a very large project that included "switching" to circuit breakers (sorry, couldn't resist), replacing a couple of the switches, and replacing all of the 1950-vintage wiring. Here are a couple photos of the switch assembly removed. swit...

Thanks for the research, Bruce! I fitted mine today in placed the felt around all the edges. I will put the tacky stuff on the upper and lower retainer areas to prevent the mentioned leaks.

Re: Windshield installation questions
The stuff ("sealer") I have is, for lack of a better metaphor, like string putty almost. It's not PRC or the sealer that Jim mentioned. It's rolled up just like "tape" would be, then you unroll it to apply it to the airframe. I'll take a picture or two when I'm at the hangar toda...

Re: Windshield installation questions
Must be time for windshield replacements...I am also replacing mine with the LP Aero unit and going through the same screw problem. The STC instructions do state "or equivalent hardware" so I'm looking at the MS35206-231 screws (same length & diameter). Yingling Aviation lists them on ...
