Re: Another Leaking Gascolator Question
Where is the leak in your gascolator? In the valve itself, or the seal where the glass meets the top or bottom? The seals/gaskets for the glass-to-frame are superceded but readily available. I replaced mine a year or two ago. I ordered two, but only needed one. If you have trouble finding one, send ...

Re: Continental O-300
I also learned the value of a qualified A&P (as opposed to "any") the hard way, albeit not as hard as the Piper guy. First airplane my family owned was a C-120. When it came time to overhaul the C-85, the "A&P" removed and disassembled the engine, told my unsuspecting fat...

Re: Weight & Balance
I know it just depends on personal desires, and the 170 is truly a classic airplane. I know the later model 182s are real pigs when it comes to empty weight (as are pretty much all the new Cessna single-engine planes, with their beefed up seating requirements, sound proofing, etc...). My hangar mate...

Re: Weight & Balance
I am really curious what the results of only adding 180 gear legs and/or larger wheels would have. In theory, moving the main axle c/l forward should increase the amount of weight measured on the tailwheel with the airplane in level flight attitude (upper door sill level), which would increase the m...

Re: SEB07-5
If you want your local A&P to install the kit, you'll likely have to buy the kit outright initially. Once the kit is installed, submit a copy of the logbook entry for reimbursement. At least that's what I heard from my local Cessna parts distributor. Others may vary, and others may want to insta...

Re: MoGas Thoughts
Even though when I sumped some out of the drain (Sorry guys don't know what it's called) down under the plane (which still had straight AvGas) into the same container the dirty fuel was heavier as it settled to the bottom . Again I was at a loss but was maybe just to stupid but the plane fired up a...

Re: Logging Flight time from Tach Time
Two methods I would consider: 1 (what I actually do in my 170) Zero out my GPS flight timer as soon as I turn it on, then reference it just before I shut it down. You could use a kitchen timer, watch, or any other method and achieve the same result. 2 (what I use in turbine airplanes I fly since the...

Glad I use Foreflight...not a single hiccup with that app. Other non-aviation apps, not so much.

Re: Had my plane weighed today
I was also of the understanding that airplanes of our vintage were supposed to have the empty weight calculated to reflect unusable fuel (as previously indicated) and NO oil in the engine (the weight of which is to be added when doing W&B calculations). Full oil was later (can't remember when, n...

Re: Cylinder break-in tips needed
As much time as possible at low altitude and high power. The horsepower output of the O-300 tapers off with altitude, and you don't have to go very high before you can't even achieve 75% power (hence the low altitude recommendation). Start it, get it in the air as quick as possible (to get cooling a...

No personal experience with the ECi cylinders yet, but am planning to use them on my engine when I overhaul. I like the CHT bosses and exhaust valve rotators and the good reports I've heard from numerous people already using them.

Re: Info needed for Ordering Glass and Controll Cables
I've not ordered control cables (yet) but if I did I'd give heavy consideration t McFarlene http://www.mcfarlane-aviation.com/ If you decide to replace all cables & chains, McFarlane offers kits that contain all the cables. If you get the galvanized steel version, beware that the Illustrated Pa...

Re: Climb Prop Basics
Had my standard-pitch prop up to 13,800 to get as much margin above cumulogranite while crossing the rockies with a 30-knot tailwind and virga above. Some downdrafts were obvious and could be avoided, others not so much, hence wanting as much altitude as possible. CHT never was an issue. Oil temp is...
