Re: RC Allen Mini6

Does the airspeed indicator and altimeter display rely on electrical supply? (Goes blank without electricity) If so, do the certification requirements for pitot static systems applicable to this airplane allow for these required instruments to be dependent upon electrical supply which is subject to ...

Re: RC Allen Mini6

Airspeed indicators and altimeters are required for VFR operations and to get answers on your question (“What am I missing?”), I would recommend consulting a certified repair station or technician that installs and maintains avionics and pitot static systems. I am assuming this instrument replaces y...

Re: 1948 170 Rebuild

Looking forward to some more pictures of the progress. If you have the original cabin top skin you might want to fasten that in place before you take too much apart. To remove the aft bulkhead you will have to remove the door sills, at which point you will want to cross brace across the door openin...

Re: Airworx 180HP O-300 STC

Lycon in Visalia, CA can perform “port & polish” on new Continental cylinders and I recall reported 159hp on their dyno for an O-300 some years back. Is that a credible claim?

Re: Flap handle

More thoughts on this: An A&P should think twice before signing any record of installation of this device because of the liability attached to his/her signature. So another recommendation might be for the owner/pilot to take responsibility for both installation and ongoing operation. With or wit...

Re: Flap handle

Flaps, leading edge devices, trim systems are considered “secondary” controls. They enhance or ease the pilot’s control of the airplane. They are part of the aircraft control system so would come under the description of major alterations in Part 43. Some will certainly argue with that, but my exper...

Re: Possible '48 fuel check valve supply

I apologize for any inference that the original poster was doing anything improper. There is nothing wrong with making an inquiry like this on a public forum with the experience and knowledge of this association. I was prompted by the question of verifying part numbers when maintaining aging general...

Re: Possible '48 fuel check valve supply

Thanks George, that makes your post a lot more clear, at least for me. An IA friend recently mentioned his worries about owners who buy their own parts between annual inspections and do not record the installations. Then they sometimes forget to mention it to the inspector who is responsible next ti...

Re: Possible '48 fuel check valve supply

The original installation instructions have often been overlooked…. but instruct to remove the internal check-valve spring and install the check valve without it. I don’t think this answers the question about whether or not the check valve on EBay would be suitable for installation on a Cessna 170....

Re: Accident Report re: electronic gyro install error?

The AvWeb story makes me wonder: Could they have been buttoning that job up and couldn’t come up with the right gasket? Could some well meaning person (avionics or maintenance) have put the vacuum cover plate on the engine so it wouldn’t get lost? We’ll finish the job when gasket comes in. Then they...

Re: Accident Report re: electronic gyro install error?

Avionics technicians involved in aircraft maintenance including repairs, installation, and alterations should work under supervision of a certificated repair station with specific authorizations for work performed. A repair station should have expertise and procedures in place to ensure any task is ...

Re: 170B fatal accident today

Years ago, my wife was a clerk in a Supermarket and one day a customer approached her and mentioned she heard her husband (me) was a pilot, maybe in the FAA. My wife responded yes to both and this woman became emotional and begged for help. It seemed that Granpa was still flying his airplane with no...

Re: 170B fatal accident today

When I was with the FAA, this and similar scenarios came up from time to time. Pilots losing their medical sometimes continue to fly. Airplanes flying without annuals are not uncommon. Rarely, there is a pilot who just never bothered to get a certificate. There was a legend down near Bakersfield of ...
