Re: L.E.D. Navigation/Strobes/Interior Lights

How about a bit on some strobes now... I have two strobes, one red on the top of the fuselage and one white on the belly. The belly strobe did not work due to the fact it had no power supply. At the recent annual it was removed and a placard installed stated "daytime VFR only". I was going...

Re: Amp Meter Flutters

Thanks for the help. Today I measured the voltage out of the generator and it is steady at 12.8 or so with varying loads. Not sure that tells you anything but it was another data point. They measured resistance from regulator to ground is very low... 0.3 ohm. I also think the master switch is origin...

Re: Amp Meter Flutters

Well Abe has perfectly described what is going on with my 170A, original generator and probably a replaced regulator. Generator was rebuilt last May, regulator history is unknown. Today I checked and cleaned the VR grounds, ohm meter says 0.3 ohms or so. Tried cleaning the points and saw the twitch ...

Re: Belly Grime bested!

I am a believer in Belly Wash. Spent an hour this weekend getting off quite a bit of soft oily grime. Make sure you have a creeper handy. Belly Wash did not work on the exhaust area on a Grumman test subject. The baked on stuff is just too much for it.

Re: Charging system (generator) wire size.

There is always more to the story.... May 19, 2010: removed generator, replaced brushes, bearings, seal. Installed on engine check out at max output all ok. This was about 50 hours ago. Last Thursday I did some digital meter readings: full load low rpm was around 12.2, average reading was around 13....

Re: Charging system (generator) wire size.

Well I checked all the wiring to the new circuit breakers and had our resident EAA electrical guru take a look at it. He agrees the "twitchiness" looks odd but is not a show stopper. The twitch is very irregular, i.e. stobe is off, no pitot heater to turn on and the ammeter will literally ...

Re: Charging system (generator) wire size.

The new breakers are in and working fine. I did keep the 30A breaker for the gen and will decide what to do when my partners return - new reg or 20A breaker. One thing different I did notice is the ammeter seems a little twitchy. The meter indicates a charge but jumps frequently between 3-9 amps... ...

Re: Charging system (generator) wire size.

Thank you gentleman for your replies and critically important info. I checked today and revealed the following: Gen: 1101898 35A, Reg: 1118736 20A, fuse holder contains a 30A fuse, wiring sure looks stock or really old. From the info above it appears that I have a generator that can output more powe...

Re: Charging system (generator) wire size.

I have been having some intermittent charging issues and am planning for circuit breaker installation for a group of three fuses: generator, stall warning and nav. lights. Current fuses installed are: 30A, 15A and 20A respectively - ouch yes I know the stall warning and nav. light fuses are high. Me...

Re: Instrument Panel Upgrade

Some fine examples of 170 panels. Yes, I am jealous. Currently I am in need of a replacement bezel and am not keen on making one myself. Any suggestions? Any for sale????

Re: Belly Grime bested!

I used Belly Wash today and it worked fine, granted the area I cleaned was moist and not that dried on grime towards the rear of the plane. The fan club watching me was suitable impressed with Wash All and the Belly Wash. No detrimental affects noticed, no long term report at this time. The black bo...

Re: F&M Oil filter adapter

Update: F&M did call and emailed today so I retract my prior comment. Instructions were sent and he Bob from F&M left a call back number. The plane and newly clocked adapter is now waiting for its first flight, perhaps Saturday. Next project is circuit breakers and sorting out the rats nest ...

Re: F&M Oil filter adapter

Thank you for your input. I suspected something along those lines but like to have as much data before the operation as possible. I inquired with F&M 2x but no response. Maybe he is on vacation. RE: 1 inch nut... I have available a number of talented people, machinists (they call themselves tool...

Extreme Simple Green - still selling as safe at AirVenture 2010. Just ordered Belly Wash and will report after the black bottom turns red (fingers crossed).

Re: F&M Oil filter adapter

I had the local FBO install the FM adapter on my 1948 170A. My partner last changed the oil and it appears the adapter twisted slightly so that the oil filter now contacts the battery box. I am unable to squeeze a sheet of paper between the box and the filter. Has this happened to anyone else? I rea...
