Re: Trim Setting for Takeoff
On my 170A I used to set mine for about 1/8th inch behind the neutral mark, until I started doing short field take-offs as a matter of course most of the time. Now I set mine 1/8th inch nose down on take-off. I get the plane airborne at 40mph indicated and the nose down helps keep the plane in groun...

Re: BAS seatbelts
I use a rotary buckle in my track car with a 6 strap harness because that is really the only option. Although I like that system, in my 170 I chose to keep it really simple and opted for the standard belt arrangement where the shoulder straps are permanently attached to the lap belt with a standard ...

Re: Extended baggage for a rag wing??
The B model is the only 170 that truly has STC's for extended baggage. The straight 170 and the A model have control cables running up the middle of the fuselage just aft of the baggage area, which make extending it problematic. I've seen one A model with an extended baggage area, that you had to pu...

Re: Vx & Vy Speeds?
I'm seeing discrepancy in speeds in my 1955 170B's POH for climb out. In Section III, Operating Details, for short field take offs with 50' obstacle, it reads: "Climb at 62mph indicated airspeed until obstacle is cleared" *20 degrees flaps However, in Section V, Operational Data, it reads...

The letter is the basis for your IA to sign off the 337, and you need a current W&B with the new tires. That is what I did several years ago. There are other threads on here discussing the basis for the letter.

Re: BAS Shoulder Belts in 170A
There were already 5 holes in my top skin from current and old antennas. My A&P elected to drill the top holes. We bore scoped the spar piece, Corrosion X'd it and sealed it all back up. Two current antenna located rear cabin top, and the big square hole from the VOR mast. A Winky sealed hole in...

Re: Fuel Dipstick Not Accurate?
I am not one of the old timers on here who will likely answer your question in detail. But, in reading your post, I have several questions right off the bat. The dip tube as you have modified it, works incredibly well on Cessna 170A and 170B wings and tanks. I have been using one for several years n...

Re: Adding a 4th Fuel Tank to Ragwing
We had 5 170 owners out to the hangar today, and one former 140 owner, who we still grudgingly allow to associate with us even though he now flies an RV-8  All hands made short work of removing the wings, after 3 days of prep work by Jared and myself, and getting them put on the trailer and...

I posted about the Delrin balls just this last September, with pictures if you would like to take a look at the discussion Jim.

Re: Rudder Attachment Bolts
Go to Harbor Freight and order the Jumbo Hemostats, both straight and curved. The curved work best on the rudder bolts. Clamp them on the shaft just below the head so you can put them above the hinge bearings and use one hand to wiggle the rudder while you push/pull the bolt down through the hole. O...

Re: 850 x 6 tires
The 8.50's will be more than adequate for grass strips and sand to small rocks. They are just about the perfect tire for 170's aesthetically as well. A good all around tire. They won't diminish your speed much at all. You will be hard pressed to notice any real difference. Your decision now is wheth...

Re: Yoke and Yoke Shaft Refinishing
Bill, Those yokes turned out brilliantly. You mention lubricating with graphite. I’ve read a number of places that one should spray a silicon lubricant on a towel and wipe that on the yoke tubes. Had you tried that? What made you go with graphite? Thanks, Doug I think I tried one of the wet silicon...

Re: Yoke and Yoke Shaft Refinishing
Brian, Did this a couple of years ago. Looked at the same threads you have on here and saw the issues with the type of chrome process. I went to a well known auto and industrial shop that does many forms of plating and powder coating to have them look at my stuff and see if they could do it. They we...
