Re: Brake Pipe Close to Failure
Yep. good catch. I would hate to discover that the other way. At annual I try to look and/or feel for this kind of stuff on every inch of all brake and fuel lines. I had that problem in a car one time. Rear brake line (flexible part) came out of its support clip. Slowly and silently rubbing in the a...

Re: 170B Fuel Selector Valve leak
Look at the nutplate idea at the end of that thread. replacing the 2 nuts with the nutplate enables you to service it from one side, alone. Lots easier for you to put back together and helps the guy who has to fix it in 30 years.

Re: 170B Fuel Selector Valve leak
No blue stains with a drip like that? Are you using 100LL? Auto gas doesn't leave a stain. Rebuilding that valve is trivial. Orings and a flat gasket. Easily rebuilt on the bench, in a half hour, while drinking a cup of coffee. Removal and replacement? Easy, if there was better access. But they didn...

Re: Overhaul Quotes
I was told there is no US duty levied on aircraft parts.
This was fifteen or more years ago, when I had a shipment of Canadian Sitka spruce imported as 'aircraft parts'
May still be true.

Re: Shuttlesworth Collection
I can usually identify most types of airplanes at flyins and museums in the USA before I get close. This collection had me absolutely befuddled on about half of them, which I found delightful. They have a few flying days each summer, those are the best times to visit, but even on a non flying day, w...

I'd like to have something more permanent than the Velcro PTT. Let me see what y'all have come up with. Cory After 22 years of ownership, I thought my velcro PTT WAS permanent. It was probably installed when the avionics were upgraded in the early 80s. Works so well I never think about it. pete

Re: Risk of Potential Adverse 5G Effects on Radio Altimeters
I had a friend whose cabin was on the final approach to Lake Tahoe airport and occasionally his garage door would open or close on a whim. He discovered that sometimes he’d come home from a trip and his garage was open. He was frightened at first he’d taken a trip and forgotten to close it. Then he...

Re: Ultralight Helicopters
These look like a heck of a lot of fun. I had a good chat with one of the Helicycle guys at oshkosh one year. I must have appeared interested enough but not quite ready to bite; he was trying to explain what they cost to build, operate, etc... I told him that I could afford the helicopter just fine,...

Re: Cessna gas caps
The silicone rubber vent valve can be found by googleing "umbrella valve." A lifetime supply of those can be obtained for a very reasonable sum with a minimum of searching. Installation is trivial.

Never thought I'd see the day...but the base price on a new 172 is 432K. Never thought I'd live this long... Joe 4518C There are new Cubs selling for north of $400k. Re: Insurance
Perhaps I should ask Avemco who's appraisal they would accept. I haven't seen any purchase price data on 170s lately, only occasional asking prices. But I suspect an undamaged, well documented, reasonably clean 170B with a bigger engine would sell for a fair bit more than the $75K hull insurance I h...

Re: Insurance
I have had $65K Hull on my airplane for many years with Avemco. ('54 with Continental IO-360) In my last conversation with them I mentioned the current trend in 170 values. They upped the hull to $75K over the phone for no increase in premium, could go higher with an appraisal. (and higher premium) ...

I've found that if you drag a shop towel (use a clean one) between the the door handle and the panel, you can snag the end of the clip with the towel and pull it out.
